The purpose of these five positions is to expand pentatonic scale for another two tones in order to get the opportunity to cover the whole neck with a natural minor scale. The simple idea is that on the example of funky groove, which is mostly played in the sixteenth, isolate each bit that we want to emphasize, and others to mutate in order to produce requested grooves. As you can see in the graphics: Downstrokes: the first and third sixteenth of each beat. The first sixteenth is called the DOWNBEAT (it's also your tempo). The third sixteenth is called UPBEAT. Upstrokes: the second and fourth sixteenth of each beat. The concept of isolating each of the sixteenth is the most important element in developing your rhythm technique. Are you able to cover the instrumental song without looking at the tabs, just by hearing ? How to find the harmonic key, the initial chord that will reveal a certain scale, how to feel modulation (harmonic changes), and so on .. For this occasion I have chosen a song from Mr. Satriani - "Always with me always with you" ! Song that contains a lot of harmonic variations, and yet not difficult to play at all (most part). We will discuss about the basic and other positions of this interesting scale and how to apply them.. I'm gonna show you some ideas that are not only good for building technique but are also interesting enough to use when performing. Here are other variants of C7 Diminished scale.. The diminished scale is almost always used as an altered scale over functioning Dominant 7th chords. Another important concern to which we devote attention to is a - position of the fingers. We gonna practice several variants of - descending and ascending runs .. The best way to learn any scales or patterns is to relate them to a chord immediately.It's important to hear from the beginning how a scale works musically.. We will deal with the basic pentatonic scales, major and minor,and their symbiosis ! This is just a graph of where you should play. You could start on different strings, and try to phrase things to sound melodic. As soon as you can, abandon the up and down scale pattern. Now let's look at Am pentatonic, probably the most used guitar scale. All we have to do is move the same pattern up the neck, though because there aren't any open strings it will not look exactly the same. Ok, you may notice that the song is in the key of D flat, in fact, the guitar is tuned a half degree lower, but visually he plays in the key of D, for a couple of open riffs ! It is not necessary to tuning your guitar a half tone lower !! You can find several of his live performances where he plays in the key of D, and also in D flat tonality. My backing track is from D ! I do not know how long we will have time for the whole song,but the safest is to divide it into several parts, on which we will work : 0:00 - 0:48 - Intro (main melody riffs) 0:48 - 1:30 - Solo part with harmonics 1:30 - 1:52 - the second riffing So, we will try with the D major pentatonic, or relative B minor pentatonic. We will also use D natural major scale ..
