I had to get stitches last night on the ring finger of my fretting hand because I sliced it to the bone last night at work. So, I got myself a drumpad and some drumsticks. I cannot play guitar for a week, and my friend across the street has a nice drumset he never really uses anymore. I have decided I will spend this week playing drums and learning some basics. I figure that it will help me not only improve my timing, but since I have never heard percussion in my head when writing music, I think I will finally have the ability to do so.

I'm sorry for the Stitches... but I think that you took a good decision. Playing drums allows to incorporate rhythm and to understand how it works.

I am a cook/dishwasher. Believe it or not, I didn't cut myself with a knife. The dishwasher we have is from the 70's or 80's. I discovered exactly how sharp the edges are last night laugh.gif

Oh Man! Thats no good, Sorry to hear about that Nihilist. So what are we looking at for recovery time before you can fret the guitar again?
A couple weeks? I think its a great idea to try and learn some drum rudiments durring this time , I would go for learning Paradiddles, I think they are great for working on accents and timing that easily transfers over to guitars alternate picking technique, Kind of like cross training if you will. Who knows you may discover the hidden drummer in yourself! I wish you a speedy recovery.

I have one week before I can even think about using that finger again. Which means no work either. Hell, that just means I have more time to use my drum pad before I go tear up my friend's drum set across the street!

I cut my index finger on my left hand once, trying to take off the lid of a big water container with a huge knife, I know, not too smart,

I almost cut a chunk of it, but now I'm ok, smile.gif

Sorry to hear that,

Hopefully u have a quick recovery bro.... when i was 20yrs old I worked at McDonalds....(bad i know) but sliced all three fretting fingers at the tips on a surgical blade, it took plastic surgery and about 2 years to get over it. Point is, it could be worse...it could always be worse haha.... U have a great attitude mate, so I hope u get back to it asap...

all the best

Jordan

Thanks, Jordan!

I sliced the tip of my index finger off before, but it didn't go down to the bone, so after a few weeks it was already healed. My first reaction was fear that I had nerve damage. After getting fixed up by the doctors I ended up being okay. I just have three more grueling days.
