Here is how I sound for the first two parts... Like MetalDan I do not use a metronome yet or backing because Im just beginning to get familiar with this lesson.

Hail brave warrior ! It's great that you've been working hard on your task despite the icy surroundings ! ph34r.gif

Sounds good so far. I can hear that you have some timing difficulties on every 3 & 4th note of each pattern. This is probably caused by the fretting hand, not the picking hand. If the fingers aren't 100% with the timing then the pick can't disguise it. So the good news is that it's not a question of speed, just tightening up the timing of the fretting hand smile.gif

Might I suggest something?
Try playing the lick in time entirely legato... shouldn't be too hard with the first sequence. (you can pick the first note if you want)

OK, I've got it clean up to about 160 but my little finger doesn't seem to want to behave anywhere above that though!!! ohmy.gif
It's alright mind, at first I thought I was going to really struggle to get it to 160!! biggrin.gif
I am going to keep at it until Weds and see where I'm at and then post whatever is my quickest (but cleanest) possible!

I'm roughly around 160 too

Though I still muck up here and there, I did blasts of it at 166 to make 160 feel slower and that helped

It's gonna be a challenge to get this at speed by the deadline but as Ben said, it's not really the goal, great if you can though.

I am hitting a wall at about 160... (80bpm)

Also the real bpm of this is actually 110bpm, played with 16th notes. I suspected as such but didn't think much of it, until Ben mentioned it also...

220 does sound daunting though tongue.gif

Hey all - just an fyi for you iPhone users out there - there is an iphone app called Anytune pro - I'm sure there are others, but basically you can record the lesson's audio right from your iphone's voice memo recorder at full speed, then share that memo via email to yourself, and then load it into anytime pro and slow the audio down (it stays in key) by 5% increments so you can play along with the lesson at a nice and slow pace, and incrementally increase the speed as you get more comfortable with it. It has loop-bars so you can isolate any part of the audio to go over as many times as you like as well.

You can load any song from itunes etc. as well. Pretty nifty tool that's pocket size biggrin.gif

oh, it's ten bucks. drawback. but given most of us are willing to pay subscription fees and purchase videos to learn to play, I figure it's a good investment that you can use for any lesson, etc.

Hope someone finds this tidbit useful.

SirJamsalot!

edit: wrote wrong app name - fixed it!

Cool Man, Thanks!

I have been using a free program called Audacity. Free download, and you import the backing track, change pitch, and tempo also.

i then export the files into reaper and play at various speeds..

Cheers

Don't forget to isolate the parts into even smaller parts (like metaldan rightly said) and practice them in bursts, should help with the speed a bit if you're having problems.

Also using a metronome as opposed to a backing track for a while might be a good idea as the click is easier to follow more accurately than a chord, it's definately less forgiving,

Glad to hear you dudes are slaving away in your little icy corners. Don't forget that afternoon exercise is going to happen soon. When you hear the big gong, time for push ups, sprinting round the temple and squats ! cool.gif

So here's an update from me.

Patterns 1 & 2 goes well @ 200 bpm

Pattern 3 goes good @ 190
Pattern 4 something 180
Pattern 5 around 160

And I haven't touched the last one yet...

Pattern 4 is the trickiest if you exclude the big position jump of 1 and 5

Great to hear that you're all having fun and games with your Task. Don't worry too much about the overall tempo of things.. as long as you've managed to improve your left/right hand synchronisation then I'll be very happy because that's the purpose of it smile.gif

It's definitely helped me Ben, especially in that now I know what I need to concentrate on in future!
Tonight I got it to 195 but that was as much as I could do before my coordination had a complete Brain-fart and left me!!
