But i don't see where the problem with palm muting is - i play Ibanez for about 4 and half years now and never had any problems with muting!

There is no problem! In my opinion a guitar without a Floyd or Edge Pro bridge is not a guitar at all and i never even look at guitars without Floyd/Edge Pro (don't take it as an offense - it's my preference and i will always stick to it).
If you are a fan of different tunings and switching between standard tunings and Drop D or something you'll spend a lot of time tuning the guitar as Floyd works with springs inside the guitar and it takes time to tune your guitar. I never bothered with different tunings - tune it to standard and rock the world - that's it! I love Floyd/Edge Pro bridges. Whammy bar is a MUST HAVE in my playing (Strat Bridges do have them but they can't do the stuff you can do with Floyd). If you want lower tuning buy a 7-string. That's what i am gonna do this summer. Floyd Roses or just locking tremeloes in general were designed to solve a spedcific problem - that strings can go out of tune it you whammy a lot. There are many reasons for this, but most revolve around the way that the strings slide over the various parts of the guitar like the bridge and nut, and also how steady the tuners are. Floyd roses fix this by locking the strings. You screw a plate or similar over the nut sop there is no movement, and they are designed to anchor at the whammy with little or no movement there as well. As a result, you are left with the ability to fine tune only (at the bridge end) since the main tuners are disabled by the plate at the nut. When setup properly, Floyds have amazing tuning stability. Also, owing to the way they work, they tension the strings against the springs in the whammy to get the exact height of the floating bridge. The flip side of this is that if you want to tune down, you need a toolikit and some time. You have to remove the plate on the main tuners and tune the strings down. Then you have to readjust the springs in the tremelo to get the right tension again. This might well take several go arounds because as you retune the tremelo will move again, so you need to adjust the stprings, until you get it all set. Then you lock the nut, and use the fine tuners. So, its a simple tradeoff. If you want an incredibly stable whammy use a Floyd Rose. If you want a guitar that you can drop tune on stage, don't! One way around this for the rich would be to have one guitar for each tuning. People who say Floyd sucks simply don't know what to do with it or don't know how to tune guitar properly. For those who want to switch tunings all day i suggest getting 2 guitars. Read the reviews that owners have posted and the overall scores. You'll have some change as well...... P.S. try to play as many guitars as you can. the shape of the neck makes all the difference to how it feels. I like the Gibson shape (nice and round) for fast playing My son likes the Fender shape which is thinner and flatter. He's still young so I'll forgive him. I've played that before, i love the sound, but its not comfortable for me. I was considering that until i played it. I didnt like how it felt.Good idea though!I was looking for something among the likes of ibanez if you have othr ideas! |
