Cosmin do you reccomend learning songs or focusing on learning particular licks in order to get new things into your playing?
Well I like to learn songs a lot more than learning just licks.

Right now I am learning a lot of songs, maybe I should lift focus of a few? Well I know I wont be able to learn everyone complete but im working on

sunny (greg howes tabbed improvisation)
The forest by Marco
Angry Joe - Feodor Dosumov
Legato lesson by Fayeed Tan
Sweep etude - Muris.V
Angelina - T Emmanuel

Hey Erik smile.gif It's nicer and a lot more motivating to learn songs and pick up the licks you like in those songs and then modify them to sound like you wink.gif How does that sound?

Your list is pretty extensive indeed - I'd suggest getting a whole song done perfectly and then moving forward if that is your goal. If you only want to analyze the songs and pick up things here and there, it's not problem to tackle more songs at once.

Hi Cosmin
I share with you another riffing idea.

Well it might be as untight as a... well lets not make that comparison xD
But I think this can get kind of heavy just came up with it

Maan! If you get this one tight, it will sound like Panteraaaa biggrin.gif Awesomeness! The drums and the riff go well together, but focus and get it 'Dimebag style tight' wink.gif Is that a deal sir? biggrin.gif

As before, if you make it sound uber tight, it's gonna rock for certain and that lick in there, it has something really Romanian in it biggrin.gif I loved the energy it transmitted and I would say it's perfect if you would change the last note smile.gif

Can you send me a recording of the same riff at a slower tempo in which you play really tight and clean?

coming up soon cosmin just a question.
Song is probably gonna be in C harmonic minor but some of the riffs are not as you hear

For example the idea I showed you, I could put it in harmonic minor instead and It would sound like this.
The important thing is though that the progression I play over will be in harmonic minor.
And its most going to be hitting the C string wink.gif

Ok man, lets just say I want to play both heavy and calm lead playing in the song like most progressive songs.
So then Harmonic minor fits the heavy part so the rythm there needs to be in harmonic minor to.

Then I might make a swtich to normal C minor for the calmer part or what do you say do I switch to major or some kind of mode?

Anyway the riffs are not in harmonic minor so to speak.

Switching to C minor can be very interesting - you can see this sort of thing happening in this piece that I did here - let me know if it makes sense and if you figured out the way I mixed the modes together biggrin.gif

Hi Cosmin it sounded very cool I can hear the modes in there.
Well to demonstrate my idea.

Well for the more "happy" chorus part I cant go harmonic minor, atleast I think so, so I made a test track to show you just fooling around.

Starts with a harmonic minor lick then you can hear it "end" thats when the new progression kicks in and i start playing something "not harmonic minor / phrygian" haha since that is what I look for you know

It can sound really interesting but I would like to hear it in a context smile.gif It would make a lot more sense mate, try and apply it against a chord progression, bass and drums and see what you get, then post it here wink.gif Deal?

Coming up. Btw writing songs in Drop C hurts my brain biggrin.gif The dislocation of note positions makes you have to think really hard.
Btw when soloing over this I will think that I am in D harmonic minor, and not use the 6th string so much.

Helps the thinking a lot

Indeed, not using the 6th string will take away a lot of problems, but I strongly suggest being aware of the note names when playing things in drop C - this is what has helped me get things right, in time. Never forget that in drop tunings, the notes found on the thickest string are the same as the notes found on the 3rd thickest string (In drop C - the notes on the thick C are like the notes on the thinner C)

Everything moves two frets up the neck in comparison with standard E when you play in drop C or Standard D. Give it time man, you will see them all, but try to do things as I suggested, by always being aware of what notes you are playing - it will go slow in the beginning but you will be better and better smile.gif

Cosmin I have looked at your metal metrics and I see most lessons are in 4/4. Is that good for metal you think?
I was thinking of 6/8 for my song but ended up in 4/4

Hey man smile.gif Anything is good! Don't get tangled up in forcing yourself to use odd time signatures just for the sake of it - you'll end up nowhere smile.gif 4/4 can provide excellent backing for A HUGE number of songs, simple or complex smile.gif Phrasing and orchestration are the ones doing the difference smile.gif

Good answer Cosmin smile.gif
Btw speaking of time signatures. I got a backing track from Damjan pejcnoiski the Macedonian who often uses odd signatures like 7/8 common in macedonia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiEEG4-PVb8...mp;feature=plcp
Ive done some training in this but this one I cant really find. Feels like 4/4 to me but it cant be right? biggrin.gif

Hi I show you now what I have come up with.
Im just jamming around a little dont mind that check more the progression change smile.gif Im not so secure while improvising in harmonic minor. So going to have to brush that up a bit too.

Well the change struggles a little in the beginning maybe something not right there maybe
also drums play 1/4 instead of 1/8 like on the more metal.starts around 0.44 in the audio file

Anyway maybe I will alter the chords a little to make it more emotional sounds too much "rock" to me haha smile.gif

also answer my last post
