My E String Broke Again!

Hey all, just wanted to ask for your advice:

A few weeks ago I bought a set of D'addardio 11's. I was using 10's before that, so it was a slight change i had to get used to, but that was fine after a couple of days.

However, only about a week ago, the high E came out of the locking tuners, when I was tuning back up from I think Drop C to standard.. I didn't actually break, but just come out of the locking tuners, but I had left virtually no 'extra' length of string out of the tuning peg, I had snipped it all off, so it was pretty much impossible to get it back into the tuning peg.

So, since I had only had these strings a couple weeks, I just bought another single E string, 11 gauge just like before. Well it's been on for about another week or so now, but just now, I had tuned down to Drop C and was just jamming around but with a bend on the 12th Fret the E string came out again, except this time, it snapped at the locking tuners, so the extra length of string I had left at the end of the tuning peg was still there, but the rest of the string was completely separate, and had come out of the tuning peg. sad.gif I'm just wondering, any advice you can give on how to keep these strings from breaking..? I mean it's not like they're 8's or anything, they're 11's..

I can guess that chances are it's from tuning between Standard and Drop C, but I don't really see a way to avoid this.. unsure.gif

What guitar is it on? tremolo or nn-tremolo?
What kind of Locking Tuners are they>
It may just be a slightly shap edge on the peg that's causing this. Can you post a pic of what's left when this happens and I'll have a better idea of what's causing it for you!

Yeah I was also thinking maybe a sharp edge was causing some mischief...

That's happened to me before. I have a Floyd Rose, so I pushed the whammy bar to the body and slipped the string back in and tightened it.

Thanks for your help guys. There's No floyd rose, it's a TonePros bridge..

And the locking tuners are just the stock 'ESP locking tuners'.. mellow.gif

Guitar's an Esp MH-1000NT btw smile.gif

I've attached two pictures here..

First one is showing you the two parts of the string, and the second one shows you how the smaller part of the string is just stuck in the tuning peg, until I release it - this is where the string's snapped, so I could imagine a sharp edge being the problem..

Suggested course of action? cool.gif

looks like it broke at the nut I think you might have a little bur there
you might try winding the string normally( without locking them) and or in the reverse direction, to see if it still does it

You mentioned D'Addario, so I will add this: There are fake D'Addario strings coming out of China. If you go to the D'Addario home page, you can type in the serial # on the packaging (if you still have it) and it will tell you if the strings are their own or fakes. I learned that on the forum when I was having a problem and just wanted to pass it along. Best wishes with it!

Yes, I'm inclined to look at this possibility first. I've had that issue before. It's quite common. You can get a sharp edge in the nut and because the string is sliding through the nut all the time it just cuts through it.

I'm not sure of the best way of smoothing the nut down though. I know people use graphite or just lead from a pencil to lubricate the nut slots but as for filing off sharp edges I'm not sure. Maybe Sensible Jones can give us some pointers ? smile.gif

Looks like it's snapped right up tight on the peg? If so I'd be inclined to suggest that there's a small, sharp edge on one side of the string hole.If that is the case then it's a fairly simple repair which you can do several ways, the two easiest are:-
1) If you have a set of Modellers Files then use a very fine round file to chamfer the sharp edge or if you don't have access to these kind of files then
2) When you replace your strings next, take the low E string and feed it through the hole in the peg. Draw it back and forth and use as a file to remove the sharp edge! (This trick also works on bridges and nuts too!)

Let me know if you need any more info/help!
