You should see a doctor to see if you have some hearing loss, in comparison to what is normal for your age group. If your tinnitus was caused by high noise levels, you probably have associated loss of some hearing ability.
In all probability there is nothing they can do for you. Tinnitus can be caused by a tumor. These are very slow growing so not a panic kind of thing. As you have exposed yourself to high sound levels, in all probability we know the cause was self inflicted, not a tumor.
It might come and go, or might be pretty chronic. Hearing damage due to excessive noise is a function of both db levels and length of time one is exposed to higher than normal levels. Even moderately high levels over a long enough period without a rest can cause damage.
I have Tinnitus in my left ear only, however as my hearing was normal for my age when I last had it tested, I think the cause was not due to high noise level exposure. Ginkgo helps me, you can try it, but I don't think it helps those who have gotten it due to exposure to high noise levels. I had some vertigo a year or two prior to the onset of the tinnitus, I suspect that an inner ear infection was the cause.
If the tinnitus is a chronic condition, don't assume that you will always think it is a big deal. It upset me at first, but I hardly even think about now, can go a week or two without even giving it a thought. Yes protect your ears. But I have seen a lot of things one heck of a lot worse than tinnitus that others have had to deal with.

Music drowns it out. One of the reasons its always one. Going to sleep, or being in absolute silence is problematic though.
Have you ever tired Ginkgo? I have read that it helps in about 20% of cases, those not caused by excessive db exposure. I use the GNC brand. I have found that other brands such as from Target don't work as the GNC does. You can get it on sale at times from their web site, pretty cheap.
I know about placebos, but over the past 5 or 6 years, I have quit taking it to see what happens a number of times. And it really does help me quite a bit, I would say cuts the severity in half, it even goes away totally a lot of the time.
