Hi Alex

I've played on and off for years and played rhythm in a few cover bands although to be honest I've always been just a chord strummer. It's hard to define my goals - I guess I just want to be able to say that I can play guitar rolleyes.gif

My weaknesses are : lack of speed, quite sloppy, no library of licks / tricks / party pieces
Strengths are harder to find ! I suppose I have a decent sense of rhythm, reasonable theory knowledge, nice orange guitar.

I mostly listen to indie and rock, although I'm happy learning any styles. I don't know if you're familiar with Graham Coxon (Blur) and Johnny Marr (Smiths) - I admire both of those. I don't really know enough about the classic guitar heros like Jimi, Yngwie, Eddie etc to have much opinion about them - that probably shocks most people on here ohmy.gif

I've done a couple of assignments now for Cosmin - the latest one is here if you're interested :

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=43589

It might show you just how much work I need cool.gif

Bring it on !

You have a nice orange guitar! And you did a great job on the Blues Track!!! I like it!
Since you have mentioned library licks we can start with those!
It will help you develop speed and timing as well!
So we will "Kill two ducks with one stone"!
I have created a blues backing track for you!
Here it is!
http://soundcloud.com/alex-feather-akimov/blues-mentoring
The chords are:
E 7

A 7

B 7

You can play:
A minor blues pentatonic

A major blues pentatonic

E minor Blues pentatonic

E major Blues pentatonic

B minor Blues pentatonic

B major blues pentatonic

So to start I want you to take two pentatonics

A minor and E major and try to combining them by creating your own licks!
Here is an example:

                           Pentatonic combinations

Hey Alex

I'm struggling with this and I can't understand why. The E major pentatonic sounds fine over the whole piece, but the A minor pentatonic doesn't seem to fit even when I play it over the A7 chord. I must be doing something wrong but I can't work out what it is - please help smile.gif

Well you have to make sure that you are landing one the right notes
Say you are playing A minor pentatonic over A7
You should not land on C because it will give you a second and will sound off
You can land on A - G - B - E
I would like you to send me a recording of your jam it will help me to get a better picture of what's going on
Also your ears might not be use to this sound and it can sound off as well
If you send me your take I will analyze it better and will be able to come up with an answer!

Here you go Alex. Sorry for the crappy sound - that's my guitar playing biggrin.gif ( and also my cheap PC mic ). You can see that my playing is very basic but at least you know how much work I now need to do cool.gif

You did a very good job! I see a huge progress in your playing already!!!
It doesn't sound basic! Your solo sounds very melodic and interesting!
I have a new assignment for you! It will be a simple one! We just will add
B major pentatonic using this shape:

Now you have 3 pentatonics to work with!
Try to connect all of them and create new licks!
For now make sure to use shapes that I gave you!

Let me know if you have any questions!
