Hey Dieter, since these are minor modes, we will use flats! Please re-write these again with flats and after that, here is your second homework biggrin.gif

Knowing that each mode belongs to a step in the major scale - you can create each mode by starting on a specific step in the major scale actually:

Ionian - step 1
Dorian - step 2
Phrygian - step 3
Lydian - step 4
Mixolydian - step 5
Aeolian - step 6
Locrian - step 7

It results that in the case of C major, as the parent scale - we derive a series of modes out of it looking at each step in its structure:

C Ionian
D Dorian
E Phrygian
F Lydian
G Mixolydian
A Aeolian
B Locrian

Which modes can be derived from each step of the E major scale for instance?

Hey Dieter biggrin.gif This is good but not that good, meaning that I would like you to use (cool.gif - meaning flats instead of # for the minor modes. Can you please transcribe everything regarding the minor modes, having this in mind?

Cosmin

When we are dealing with E phrygian A aeolian and B locrian in the C major scale as well as D dorian and the rest - meaning F lydian and G mixolidian are major modes. In this particular case - when C major is the parent scale, we do not have any flats or # smile.gif

Please let me know if you understood wink.gif

Ionian: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C
Dorian: D, E, F, G, A, B, C, D
Phrygian: E, F, G, A, B, C, D, E
Lydian: F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F
Mixolydian: G, A, B, C, D, E, F, G
Aeolian: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A
Locrian: B, C, D, E, F, G, A, B

These are CORRECT! biggrin.gif Now, for E major - it's notes are E F# G# A B C# D# E as there are alterations in this scale - you will find the actual formula of any scale by applying the w w h w w w h formula (w - whole tone, h - half tone) starting from its root note tongue.gif Now that you know this, let's revise the second part of the homework.

Hello Cosmin !

Wow , THESE ARE CORRECT - just made my day ! biggrin.gif

Haha i was thinking a lot of logical ways ohmy.gif , but the easy one was IT ! mad.gif

I am not using an excuse when i say my english understanding is sometimes complicated too - makes it a bit more confuse for me.

I decide to learn theory in english because its a english lesson too and of course the language of GMC .

Beside that i did try to go into theory in german - of course the same thing butttttttt.. many different names for all that stuff
i already start to understand in english -- so better i leave it mad.gif

OK her the E major scale you show me E F# G# A B C# D# E and than the modes:

E-F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#
F#-G#-A-B-C#-D#-E
G#-A-B-C#-D#-E-F#
A-B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#
B-C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A
C#-D#-E-F#-G#-A-B
D#-E-F#-G#-A-B-C#

Ok! Correct wink.gif Now please apply the 'w w h w w w h' formula, in order to obtain the exact notes of the D major scale and extract its modes just like you did with E major and then name each one wink.gif

Ready? GO!

Hehe, no no. When I say characteristic scale degree, I mean that particular note/ notes which give each mode its flavor smile.gif

In the Ionian it's the 7th, in the Dorian it's the 6th, in the Phrygian it's the b2nd, in the Lydian it's the #4th, in the Mixolydian it's the b7th and in the Locrian it's the b5th. They give this flavor usually when they are played agains the right chords, but for now, let's spot these notes for the modes of the D major scale smile.gif

Hey Dieter smile.gif Well, my fault here smile.gif I forgot to mention a very important aspect: I also wanted you to spot the characteristic scale degrees for the D Ionian, D Dorian, D Phrygian, D Lydian, D Mixolydian, D Aeolian and D Locrian biggrin.gif using the same indications wink.gif

These that you found are correct! cool.gif And it's G for the B Aeolian.

Hallo Cosmin !

Lets do theory !

I will try now to spend more time with guitar study - playing and theory of course.

The last months been very busy and a bit hard for me ( job and family) but looks like i am getting in balance again .

I try to work only maximum half day time and spend more time with my family and myself the next years and hopefully rest of lifetime cool.gif .

So i always wanted to play guitar tongue.gif lets go !
