Task 15: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-4/

Goooooooooooooooooooooooood morning Disciples !!! It's time to get wobbly - it's vibrato time ! biggrin.gif

This one has 3 different vibrato approaches in it but I want you to just use whatever is the most natural way to you. The focus is on control, keeping it even and also try and see if you can vary the intensity or speed of the vibrato through the lesson, just to show me and yourselves that your vibrato technique isn't just an automatic response, ok ? smile.gif

As I said in the Apprentice thread, I'm away from next Friday afternoon, so I'll have to make a deadline of next Friday 11th May, that way I can be here to put up the next Task.

There will, of course, be a Donut of Celebration for the first disciple to post their take ! If there's a better motivation than that, then I haven't heard of it ! wink.gif

Enjoy, Dudes !

Not necessarily. You guys have a good vibrato foundation already. I'd just like to work with what personal modes of expression you already have smile.gif

Hey Ben,

Here is a quick one. I was lazy to do this but I learnt one part of the video one day. Next day, I am actually recording the whole thing. smile.gif The timing seems pretty tricky on this one and I cannot grab it 100%. Hopefully it sounds okay.

Thanks,
Chandra

Yo, Chandra.. nice work ! smile.gif

Your vibrato is just great ! The bends are giving you some resistance at the moment. For those high bends near the end, like at 0:58, don't forget that once you bent up a whole tone then another semi tone.. you don't want to drop the string right off, you want to bring it down a semi tone again before cutting the note off - I hope that makes sense ?

Nice take Maharzan! I'm hoping to have mine up later tonight.

This lesson has definitely opened my eyes to varying vibrato. I realize I've always been on auto mode and just do whatever happens. It kind of opens up a new "level" of expression.

The only issue I have is with sustain. There's several parts where my note dies although the vibrato helps to keep it going some. The original version is awesome because Ben's sustain seems to go forever and the long winded notes come across much stronger than what I have going.

Cool, I am looking forward to your take. I guess sustain has to do with the amp model / effects / guitar as well. Mine is same. I will try with another guitar in my next take and see how it is. Am definitely, recording another one. smile.gif

Yes, this is exactly the issue I was targeting with this series. Instead of vibrato being an automatic response that has no variation, I wanted people to learn that there's various ways of approaching so you can adjust it to your mood at the time smile.gif

The Marshall amp and hot pickups probably have a lot to do with it wink.gif

I've always struggled to get decent sustain with digital effects or software.

That's my problem. For me, just playing around the house, Guitar Rig is great because I get a ton of possible variations with no hardware or mess besides my foot control. It's also great for playing with backing tracks and that sort of thing but occasionally I do come across a downside like this one.

Usually if I come across an issue with sustain I actually dial back the drive a little and go for a more bluesy sound to off set it.

Here's my take on the Vibrato Odyssey. Again, an easy sequence of notes to play but tons subtlety that's tricky to get a hold of. Looking forward to the next!

Fantastic work, Greg ! It's difficult to get those high notes isn't it ? You managed to pull down to the semitone on the second one at 0:58.. it's not easy but you did it smile.gif

Both you and Chandra did great on this !

Thank you Ben. I really want to record another take but this bend has ripped my middle finger. My nails are short (I bite them, shhh.. ) so it teared down that joining little bit so it hurts. I am waiting to recover. It was better today but after few more practice, its still weak. I will have to stop biting my nails. biggrin.gif

I have to say that this bend is pretty difficult, even when I am using my ring finger. Will try again. smile.gif
