Guys, I Need Your Advice! Options

I just busted my thumb sparring today. With a girl that weighs about 70 lbs less than I do lol... bring on the hate, Ben and Christian This is why you should wear proper gear when doing pad work, and especially heavy bag work. It wasn't that bad when it first happened, but then I decided to continue with the rest of the training, which included more sparring with bigger opponents, and heavy bag work. This just made it worse and worse. This is why its bad to have an ego.

Its my right hand thumb, which is on the hand I throw retarded punches with. Its pretty painful to be honest, but thats not whats bothering me. Pain is just weakness leaving the body.

The problem is now I can't pick or strum, but I still want to practice. What should I practice now that one hand is useless? This really bothers me because its my right hand technique that needs the most work. Plus, I just started learning "A National Acrobat" by Black Sabbath, which is a really fun song to play.

Yes, legato would be a great thing to practice

You do have a good point about avoiding certain activities. But so many guitarists practice martial arts, surely it can't be that harmful... at least thats what I thought

What caused it is really poor technique on my part, and not wearing any gloves. I know, I'm a genius

So if you're gonna do any martial art, wear gloves and land your punches squarely on your two front knuckles. And make sure your partner thats holding the pads knows how to counter your punches with the pads

you could do some arpegios fingerpicking using you index and middle finger or some rasguedo flamenco style, or tapping exercises

This seems like a great time to work on your "One Handed Technique!" You can generate enough down force to play entire solos, shred like a nutter, or play blues and power chords, using only the left hand.

Try doing your normal stuff, just try it with left hand pressure only. You'll work up some serious finger power

I didn't know you were partaking in the violent arts, Mr Bone ? Is it boxing ? Muay Thai ? Tell me more

It's possible a strained/stretched ligament or tendon if it got bent back in the wrong direction or something. I don't think it will be too long before you'll be able to play with it though (I mean, guitar... c'mon guys !!)

I also learned the hard way not to hit the heavy bag without proper gloves although it was my knuckle that complained in my case. It's been a matter of months now and as soon as I get a proper pair of gloves I'll be back to it.

Yes, when something won't let you go in a direction you were heading in, just treat it as an unexpected scenic tour and explore something else that maybe has been neglected so yeah, legato !!

I am doing this with Alex and you really feel that strength in the left hand fingers.

BTW, I had an accident too about a year ago and my thumb got cut. I had to plaster it all for 6 weeks. But I used the fingers, country picking! Hope it gets well man. I know the pain.

I guess you could play 3 string per string arpeggios as long as it doesn't involve barring the same fret

Sometimes its hard doing pad work with a girl, because my eyes just naturally gravitate to a persons center. Usually the person holding the pads I'm hitting is a dude, so my eyes glancing at his chest isn't a problem. But with a girl, it messes everything up lol... I want to tell her, "I swear I'm not staring at them on purpose!" but that would only make it worse

The violent art I'm partaking in is Krav Maga. Definitely check it out if you're into martial arts

Which chords should I play in G major/E Minor? (the scale I'm most familiar with) Is there anywhere I can find the three string arpeggios up the neck for that scale?

Your stomage and Indestinel should be healthy because brown millet got a lot of acid.

3 big spoons a day minimum and only with water nothing what is kind of sweet !

Tips for guitar exercises i better don't give - i need them myself

Material Art and Nature is one important point on the way .....

Ever thought about training in the forest - a great an honest partner - TREE!

There are many of them and in many different figures and forms what makes it easy to find the right partner to exercise what ever technic you like.
A tree should be respected as a friend - he is honest with you and you feel right now when you made a mistake or just hit to strong on him.

But its not his mistake its than yours .

What i wanna say you learn within the nature more about your self if you might imagine .

You must feel your movement and technic and build up the power and body within to the point - contact ,
step by step . It takes years but it works in mind and body.

Ever thought of a Makiwara - to buy is expensive - but its possible to make it self too.

To wear cloves and stuff like that for combat is important sure , you shouldn't harm anyone and not yourself of course.

I tend to dislicate my right sholder every 2 to 3 years... touch wood its not happend for 3 and a half, anyway when i'm strapped up i tend to practice chord shapes without strumming of course.. and just move around the fretboard, you could also practice finger picking without the thumb...

Now I've said that I'm probably tempting fate....

But I was more thinking about scales/licks etc. But yeah, why not arpeggios as well? If you've messed up your thumb, you gotta work without it right? So buck up and get cracking!
