I like the GrooveTube 6L6 power tubes in my Fender HRDIII. I only have had the amp for about a half year so I haven't tried any other tubes with it. On the other hand, I didn't like the sound of the same tubes in my Laney head. Changed out to EL34 Elctoharmonix and they sounded great.

Sorry, I just realized you are asking about EL84. I have no experience with those tubes. What kind of tube amp are you using for those el84's?

As far as preamp tubes.... I always liked using JJ ec83 for some thicker/bottom end sounding gain.

I've been pretty happy with TAD (Tube Amp Doctor) 6L6's. Its a high quality tube for a good price.

As you may have noticed from most of the responses, many players just want tubes that are reliable and sound nice and every model mentioned in the thread will do that for ya. The differences in sound can be subtle at high gain settings so it's not a huge factor in many cases.

The choice of pickups on the other hand has a big impact on your overal sound. Even at high gain, various pickups have vastly different tonal qualities. Part of shaping your sound is finding out which pickups sound like what you want hear.

Practice!
Todd

Svetlana makes the best tubes! Actually Russian tubes are the best! U.S.S.R. even better but very hard to find!

Here is a quick tone example from a 12AX7EH which is built in to my VOX TONE LAB EX. It's the only actual "Tube" device I've ever owned. I"ve played through wads of heads and such, but always been a fan of solid state crunch. Now that I've got a tube device, I have to say the clean channel in particular just sings! I'm starting to get what all the Tube Heads have been saying.

Of course, I tried to make it sound METAL right out of the box, but it does Non Metal better than anything I"ve had.

Here is a clean sound with it.

I have a VHT Fryette 50/12 and a mesa boogie studio 22+, they both use EL84 power tubes, they'er wired to the extreme so the capacitors are running around 380-400volts, so these two amps really like to go through the power tubes but they sound awesome as the tubes are always being pushed, even at low volumes, I have a amp specialist near my town who recomends JJ tubes because thy'er tough and can handle the high voltage better than other brands, as for the 12ax7 tubes I have mullards atm, and a couple of sovteks, I'd like to try the genalex gold lions, they're supposed to be the beez neez.
thanks for your input guys
