I've actually been analyzing the Leads and Riffs Rockhouse Method DVD. It is the one that features Bullet for my Valentine's lead guitarist Michael Paget. He's my favorite guitarist and I've had the DVD for a while but I've just recently startedexploring his playing style.

Very nice! I'd be curious to see a riff biggrin.gif Will you show me something?

Can do! I have my ESP in Drop-C for another week so I could probably get a (decent) video of me playing a few of their riffs! You should check him out if you haven't already. My Dad doesn't usually compliment the bands that I like because he thinks they are all the same. However, my Dad even noticed that he is very bluesy and pays close attention to his bending.

Oh yes he is! He's been playing for over 20 years. He raised me on blues, rock and metal. Definitely a guitar guy laugh.gif

It is sometimes. He's a lot better than me and can pinpoint flaws in playing well and I usually take his criticism the wrong way laugh.gif

I have a question about maybe changing the route of my mentoring...

I'd like to stay with metal but I'd also like to branch off to other styles to try and build my own playing style rather than copy my favorite artists.

I hoped you'd say that at some point smile.gif because that's what we all should be aiming towards! What other styles would you like to incorporate?

I'd like to incorporate blues, jazz, and darker sounding music as well as get a good understanding of minor and diminished scales.

Not to sound all depressed or something but I really like dark music. I feel it teems with emotion.

Gotcha mate!

Well, let's see what we can do about getting you acquainted with the diminished context for starting out. Please take a look over the lessons below and choose your favorite. It would be a good idea to tackle them all (speed is not important here, but the shapes and the correlation of the arpeggios and scales with the harmonies), simply to get your ears acquainted to the sounds and understand more about contextual situations regarding this concept smile.gif

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Dimini...Responsibility/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Dimini...peggio-Madness/

How does this sound to you? After that I would suggest picking up a track - a backing from these lessons would be cool I think - and applying the concepts you have understood from these lessons.

Cosmin

Yes. The are great. I really like the 2nd and 3rd videos.

One thing though, in the introductory section of the 2nd video you suggested, Muris talks about learning the notes of each scale used to be able to transition smoothly.

My question is, how do I actually learn where each scale starts and ends?

I'm no theory expert and I really barely know the notes of a guitar. I feel like I need some theory background in order to be able to understand all of this.

Hey Trey,

It is indeed an important thing to be able to see the notes making up a scale on the neck and get to make up arpeggios, scale sequences or use intervals at command, so for this, I recommend the following

Each of those scales is based on the harmonic minor formula -> 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 8 - you can apply this from all the root notes and obtain all the harmonic minor scales used in the lesson.

Try to do this and listen to the scale go up and down covering 2 octaves let's say. After that, try to ascend and descend using intervals and various groups of notes (8ths, triplets, 16th notes, groups of 5, of 7 notes etc.)

Once you have done that, you will have a pretty good view of your 'map' so to say and then the paths chosen by Muris on your 'map' won't seem so foggy wink.gif

What say you?

Cosmin

Sounds like something that will take a while. I'll probably go through and do the actual lesson and then go back and actually try to learn more about it.

For sure Cosmin.

Question, have you ever played an Gibson guitars? If so, what are your experiences with them? I'm looking into them right now as I'll be receiving lots of graduation money from relatives.

Any bad experiences or preferred guitar styles?

Hey Trey - lotsa money/ lotsa decisions ey? biggrin.gif

I am not a fan of Gibson guitars, simply because I can't get along with playing them so, I wouldn't know what to say - I am more of a strat type body fan.

But PRS is my game wink.gif Have you tried those?

Always have loved PRS but have never known where to start?

Before I got my Alexi it was between the Alexi Sig and the Purple Allender model PRS.

Mate, the ESP is quite a metal guitar smile.gif if you get 2000 bucks, I'd go for a good ol PRS custom 24 or an SC 250 - the singlecut, somewhat like Mark Tremonti's model, but a bit cheaper.
