up until friday night there I hadnt picked up my guitar for about a week mellow.gif just kinda lost the will to do all the exercises I had been trying to improve and all things I really want to be able to play just seemed to be more unachievable.
I understand that I wont get better from NOT playing but is everyone else here pure super-focused or do you occasionally get dips in momentum or enthusiasm? if so what do you guys do?

for the record, I watched a documentary about pink floyd which helped a little as it reminded me how utterly cool I would be if I could play half as good as gilmour smile.gif granted, I still have a voice in the back of my head which is saying 'yeah.... dream on sucka!' but at least I played a bit this weekend.

Yeah, totally.. it happens to me and I'm sure it happens to everyone else here too, right guys ?

It usually happens to me when I've been cramming technical exercises non stop, and forget to play for the joy of it. I've been inspired recently to look at using unusual intervals in my phrasing but still playing it 'my way' and that's kept me really motivated as I'm just using my natural strengths to come up with great stuff instead of conjuring forth extra technique that I don't have smile.gif

Maybe you need to lay off the axe for 2 days and hit a tire with a sledgehammer ??

I had about 2/3 days off guitar as I got brickwalled by practising the same thing and it did me good !

Yeah, this is common.

On the plus side (if you've been practicing hard), when you return, you should've improved a noticable bit smile.gif

Just don't be too idle, keep trying to stimulate more motivation and get back to practicing ASAP!

Everyone definitely goes through these periods. I press on no matter how irritated I get. I do get lax every long once and a while and return to my 'Goban' studies, but that is rare and short lived.

My 'mentor' once gave me a very solid piece of advice that helped me break through my seemingly perpetual depression a couple years ago.

"Do the damn thing."

I memorised and applied this mantra. When guitar gets tough, just do the damn thing and you will eliminate all of the obstacles in your path. I promise. You might not see it right away, but the progress will be there; and I guarantee you that the enjoyment will be as well.

The most guitar related concept for me was listening to others. I became so jaded by all the shredders like Yngwie, Satch, and Vai after awhile. I felt as if shred was lacking feeling because just about every shredder sounds mechanical. Then someone posted something from Govan's Erotic Cakes and I decided to give it a listen even though I was beginning to find that kind of music detestable. It opened the path again and set me straight.

Oh man, I have those sometimes.. It feels like there's a huge gap, between me and that certain spot I want to reach and even if I know what I should do to get there, I somehow don't feel like doing it at that point.

Ben is right, we have to balance the technique development with the creative process - in that way things tend to get boring less and less. For instance, I got this nifty idea which I want to discuss with you guys in the v-chat session on Friday wink.gif

Hi mate, yeah, this is normal, it happens with practicing and it can also happens with a musical project or band that doesn't work as you want. The secret here is knowing which things can keep you motivated, and Videos/Documentaries are some of the most motivational things for musicians. Knowing and seeing other musicians experiences can make us feel less isolated and alone in this journey based in our dreams. Don't worry about this,, just remember why you started and start feeling that first sensation again. smile.gif

Just hang in there, what I normally do is work hard on guitar for 6 weeks, then I take a break for a week. Just like body building.
Normally on the break, I try to not touch the guitar at all. So when I go back to it, I really want to play and generally I play better, when I come back after the week off of playing.

When you get frustrated just put the guitar down and go do something non guitar related. I posted on another thread, I switched to playing left handed guitar due to focal Dystonia. Now imagine you had to start over again. So everybody has their good days and bad days.

Oh, also if you feel you are not making any progress think back when you first started playing guitar and see where you are at now.

Quitting is not an option. To be good at anything requires hard work and dedication :-)

Great post and I agree totally. I also somehow play even better when I go back to the guitar after a lay off of a few days or even more.

that's kinda funny that you mentioned bodybuilding, Im very much into weight training and deal with plateaus etc with that.. I know what you are saying, good advice, thanks.
sorry to hear about the focal Dystonia, I admire your drive switching to left handed.

For instance, I am in Warsaw, Poland right now smile.gif I will not play the guitar until Friday when I return. These 3 days are spent doing other things, which will lead me to a big thirst in guitar playing and some inspiration after visiting this cool city biggrin.gif

Yep - very often for me. I've learned to overcome it using the discipline route. The hardest part of overcoming a lack of desire for doing something, is to "just do it". Sounds cliche', but I find that if I have no interest in playing any given day, I'll reach down and pick up my guitar and start playing just to spite myself, and all of a sudden, within ten minutes I'm having fun.

A few other things that inspire me to play that might apply to you? listening to music before practicing sparks the old creative monster within, and once I pick up my guitar, a good routine to get into is to throw on a jam-track and play along with it a bit. Those two things are effective for me ~ try them and let us know if they are effective for you. Not every session has to involve scales!

LOL! yeah, I think I had been concentrating way too much on a few exercises to the exclusion of more enjoyable stuff. I'll definitely give your suggestions a go, cheers dude smile.gif
