Hey man! This here is your spot! We will use this to develop your skills, both from the perspective of theory and practice!

While you are preparing the recording, I will tell you that I was avid of information and I still am, since I was very young. I wanted to KNOW IT ALL!

The thing is, that in the beginning and some great amount of time after starting to play, I had no clue where to take things to, until I started hanging out with Romania's great guitarists. From that point on, the inspiration they provided and the knowledge, was channeled into a practice regimen which was still chaotic but very driven. I refined things along the way, while facing various situations - you know the old saying, learn to swim if you're thrown in the water...or drown.

I wanted to live laugh.gif so I tried to discipline myself and took things piece by piece.

I suggest we start dealing with a little theory and in parallel with some technique - what knowledge do you have about theory and what's your favorite technique?

Cosmin

Okay, I see! smile.gif

It's hard to say, but I don't have very much knowledge of theory. The most of the theory I know have I learned from GMC videos. I have kind of problem with scales.. Problem memorizing the scales and to use that knowledge. Feeling kind of lost tongue.gif

Maybe a little stupid question, but what do you mean by favorite technique?

Hey mate!

Well, by technique, I mean a way to produce a certain sound/ series of sounds out of the guitar - for instance:

- legato will sound like the notes blend into each other smoothly, like the sounds of a piano - but they are still separated.
- alternate picking - the notes are clearly separated and the effect is more rhythmic/ percussive.

You probably like a certain technique, right? smile.gif

Regarding theory and the scales, we can start working on them right away. Check this out:

A good way to memorize notes on the neck would be the following:

1) Choose any note and find all the places where you can find it on the neck smile.gif
2) Start a metronome at about 60BPM quarter notes
3) At each 'First beat' out of the 1, 2, 3, 4 play and sing the name of the note, each time in a different position on the neck
4) Increase tempo once you can go through all the positions 3 times in a row without any mistake
5) The faster you are, the better you can react to change and know the positions instinctively biggrin.gif

What say you, my friend?

Cosmin

Okay, well, I have only played with alternate picking, so i guess that alternate picking is my favourite technique. smile.gif

Thank you! That sounds like a good way to memorize scales smile.gif but I am not sure I understand, shouldn't I play the whole scale?
Or is the point that I first start finding the root note?

Good morning mate!

The idea is that if you learn all the notes on the neck in this way, you will then go to more complex forms, such as intervals, chords, arpeggios and scale sequences, but this is the simplest element you can start with smile.gif

Regarding alternate picking, how would you fare with this lesson here? biggrin.gif

Great man smile.gif The lesson will help out in two directions - getting you acquainted with correct alternate picking technique and rhythmic subdivisions which you will encounter in your musical journey from now on wink.gif

Hey man! Aside from some little 'hick-ups' which I am sure that have appeared due to some moments where focus lacked, the take is pretty much great!

How did the other exercise go? Are you comfy with it? Now, would you like to try another alternate picking lesson, maybe a little more challenging? biggrin.gif

Thanks! Yes there were some "hick-ups" but I recorded and sent it anyways.

Do you mean the octave-exercise? I am still working on that. Yes of course I will biggrin.gif

Very good mate, even if there are small mistakes, it's important that you record as often as possible and correct the stuff afterwards wink.gif

Anyway, looking forward to hearing about your experience with the octave exercise and in the mean time, for the AP practice, why don't you check this one out?

Hi Cosmin!

Since almost the day I signed up at GMC I have practiced on Trond Vold's "rock solo - beginner lesson".
I find it very hard to play the whole thing without any mistakes, there is always 3-4 minor mistakes, but now I have finally recorded it and I am quite happy with the results even though there is some mistakes biggrin.gif

So here it is smile.gif Now I am going to seriously practice on the outside-inside picking.

Hey Andrew! The timing is generally good, but quite a few bands are not hitting the correct pitch, while the vibrato should be more even and wide. What do you say if we focus on correcting these for a while? These elements are of crucial importance in your playing and they should be treated accordingly. If you still plan on tackling the inside outside picking - this should do the trick to start with: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Inside-Outside-Picking/

What do you think?

Yes, the inside-outside picking is what I am training on now. And while I do that I think I am ready to take the octave-practice to the next step smile.gif

Alright! Let me know when you got a recording you want to show me and...regarding the other exercise smile.gif I do believe that now, we can try this:

1) Chose any note on the neck
2) Play it and then sing it - memorize it's sound just like in the previous exercise
3) Play its 5th and then sing it - repeat the previous step
4) Play the note at step 2) and SING the its 5th smile.gif
5) Repeat steps 1-4 for considering the 5th at step 3 as the root and then its 5th - go on until you can sing and play as many notes as you can in this way.

This drill will get you acquainted with the sound of the 5th!

What do you think?
