Hey John,

thanks again for choosing me mate smile.gif

Well, in order to be able to express ourselves we should learn how to understand and speak a language. Music is a foreign language too, right? The letters are the notes and the words and phrases can be built using notes smile.gif

This is the way I see things - now tell me a little bit about what you know regarding theory and we will take it from there.

Let's rock!

Cosmin

Yes! A language that I speak well enough to have simple conversations, but my accent is TERRIBLE! laugh.gif

As far as theory goes, I can build scales using formulas, and can then find the basic triads from the scale. I pretty much stick with minor and minor pentatonic. I've yet to venture into the modes too far.

I know when improvising to stick with the chord tones, which is always major or minor for me. Sometimes, if I get REALLY crazy, I might go for a 7th. but otherwise VERY simple.

And, I'm pretty weak in practice, so I've got to plan ahead most of the time.

Hehehe biggrin.gif Well, the idea here is that you have to get your ears accustomed to using certain sounds tongue.gif

So, I suggest we focus on ear training and associating the sounds with positions - applied theory, which will consist in analyzing various musical contexts and drawing information out of there.

In the same time, we can focus on technique - which one is your favorite? You need to get your hands ready to react at what your ears tell you biggrin.gif

You're absolutely right. Ear training and theory is without a doubt my weakest area, and I'd like to work that area most. Although, I'm always willing to improve technique as well. I've never been able to build the speed needed to play more complicated stuff (without getting really sloppy.)

So I'm ready to work on whatever you give me !

After thinking about it more, string skipping and tapping are techniques that I'd like to be able to incorporate more into my improv rather than just building speed simply for the sake of playing fast.

Good morning man!

To start off with the simplest but efficient ear training exercise, here's what you will have to do:

1) Choose any note and find all the places where you can find it on the neck
2) Start a metronome at about 60BPM quarter notes
3) At each 'First beat' out of the 1, 2, 3, 4 play and sing the name of the note, each time in a different position on the neck
4) Increase tempo once you can go through all the positions 3 times in a row without any mistake
5) The faster you are, the better you can react to change and know the positions instinctively
6) This is where things get trickier - after you play the first note, SING the rest, before you play them biggrin.gif this will get the sound of the note into your system!

For tapping, let's start off with this nice lesson - it combines the technique itself PLUS interesting shapes which will open up some insight on arpeggios played on the same string smile.gif

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Basic-Tapping/

and string skipping we'll tackle after this smile.gif

What say you?

This sounds good! I'll start tonight and see how it goes.

So, at 60bpm, I play 1 note per click or 4?

That makes a lot more sense! smile.gif

I noticed the first few bars of the tab aren't exactly what he plays. I started learning from the tab, but now I'm doing it like he does in the video (I like the sound better.) Does it matter which way I learn it?

Hehe smile.gif If you want to do a REC take, you would better do it the way it's featured in the video - that's a general rule for every lesson you would like to have featured in the REC zone wink.gif

Got it!

Also, I'm a little confused about the instructions you gave me. The way I've been doing it is picking a note, say 'A'. Then, sing the note and play it all over the neck. Of course, singing octaves of 'A' isn't that hard, but theres no way I can sing the highest 2 octaves! laugh.gif So, I start with the lowest octave and work my way to the highest, then pick another note and play that. I'm thinking thats not what you had in mind.

Do you mean scale positions? Or just the general area my hand is in at the time?

Also, is the general idea of this to learn the names of the notes all over the neck as well as associate its tone with it?

So, if my note is 'A', I'll be singing 'A' before playing it in that position?

Ahoy there! smile.gif Your playing is clean! Congrats for that wink.gif It's a good take but, it can be improved by paying a bit more attention to the consistency of your rhythmic approach. The 16th notes are not equal in many spots in your take, so focus on getting them to sound equal as rhythmic subdivisions. This is the only thing which separates you from perfection smile.gif

Regarding the exercise - my goal is to help you associate positions with sounds and as the timing increases, to become able to spot notes instantaneously smile.gif If you could get the sounds in your head and sing them at that speed before you actually play them, that would be nothing short of amazing biggrin.gif It's the goal of every instrumentalist - being able to play what you just sung on the spot smile.gif

Let me know when you are comfortable with the speed and note recognition - try other notes as well, as we'll be moving to intervals then wink.gif

Thanks for the input. I did notice the rhythm issues when I was listening back. I'll work on that now. Also, the exercise makes sence, too! So, I guess in each position, there will only be 2 or 3 of each note? So after playing and singing those, move up 4 frets?

Mate, I don't think I understood the question sad.gif You find all the A notes and play them at random, the more at random and the more the speed increases and you are able to manage, the better biggrin.gif

Hey Cosmin! Just checking in to see if I'm on the right track with the rhythm of the 16th notes. Also, I'm getting pretty comfortable with the notes and sounds at 60bpm (at least all the natural notes, I haven' been working on any sharps or flats.) I can usually go faster after warming up a little and getting in to the exercise.

Here's another take. Hopefully I'm on the right track! cool.gif
