You can pick one but let's let Steve Vai and Andy Timmons for later. I didn't remember Dio's song solo, it's so Randy Roads! biggrin.gif

Hi mate, thanks for the update! I love those 3 songs and used to play them with my friends.
Are you learning the solos by ear? Are you also analyzing the scales used and the relation between the notes used over each chord from the progression?

no, not yet...
I just started to learn the solo and get the feeling of how the backing starts to get more intense...
but I will do that!

no.. I amnot learning the solo by ear, I am not able to learn by ear....I am trying to use tabs but listen to the way the notes are played by listening to the solo and then I try to follow that...
but hearing things and play them is a thing I am not really able to do..

Well, learning songs and playing them over the original songs and backings is a a very good training. However give you a chance to at least try to learn some parts by ear. It would make the whole practice 100% more effective. You will be training your ear, which is the most important skill that a musician can have, and at the same time you would be making the connection between mind and ear smoother. So it's pure success!

It can't be impossible using a software like the amazing slow downer (Download it HERE). You can have your guitar pro opened or a tab paper and start learning 1 note at a time. It's enough if you learn one or two phrases each day but you have to do this diary.

What do you think? Can we choose a solo to be learnt in this way?

Iron Maiden is always a good place to start...excellent..

I will start and try it..but I will need a lot of time and I promise I will not cheat by using tabs...shall I try the whole song or only the solo?

I just had my first "learning a song by ear" session and it didn´t take my very long to figure out the double lead at the beginning, the main part of the verse (theres is one chord I don´t know yet but I will find out) and the whole refrain..

Great fun and very rewarding!!!

very cool...
I will be away for a few days but then I will start with the solo....
really much better then just using tabs...

Hi!

did a little more of "wasting love" - there is only the solo missing now.. but I had to focus my attention to the solo of tears of a dragon - I told you that I have to play the song in october and I like the ending of the solo, roy z plays on "scream for me brazil" much better then the original version so I try to learn the end of the solo by ear.... tough but I managed the first bit already....
and I experiment with different programs to slow down music - I uninstalled "best practice" cause the audio quality is bad and the interface is not very good.
I now test "transcibe!", "riffstation" and "song surgeon" to find the one that suits me best...

what else should I pracitce?

greetings
wollace

Excellent! Keep on experimenting which is the best way for you to learn songs by ear. As I said previously, your ear needs to be trained, it helps for every aspect of playing and making music.

What else to practice?

- Technique training

- Improvisation/composition

Where do you think you are stuck regarding this two topics?

I guess in both...

but I would really like to get more into improvisation/composing cause I always have difficulties writing solos for new songs... I just don´t come up with good ideas and I really would like to come up with good stuff (not technical but good to listen to)...

I know the major scale and the pentatonics (I always use the minor pentatonic and/or the major scale)...
I never really dug in deeper into arpeggios although I know what they are and I sometimes use the classcial minor arpeggio starting on the 5th string..

Ok, please check out the first module of the improvisation course where I cover Major Scales, Diatonic Sequences and some major Arpeggios shapes. The course will go deeper with Arpeggios but this is the first contact with them.

This is the link to the lesson notes: HERE

Please also replay the Vchat session to see how to work on the tabs and combine the exercises.
