just had a random question, i'm using podfarm and was wondering if using the noise gate is considered cheating.. i find that if i use it it makes it less noisy and it makes speed picking notes stick out more. I'm jsut not sure if other people use them or what...

I don't think many would see it as cheating in the least. If you think about it, it would make it harder to play clean. You have less noise to hid behind. Same goes for gain, when you start to add gain you can actually play a little bit sloppy and get away with it. All depends on how good someones ears are.

I use a noise gate on my amp, if I didn't it would be tons of feedback when I run my distortion pedal.

Using a noisegate is not cheating, it is a good way to eliminated unwanted background noise. A fully blown upo highgain amp will just produce a lot of this noise, so you better use a noisegate to keep it in check. And if you are unsure about your playing, play your speed picking lick not only with a highgain sound, but also clean, there you won't need the noisegate and you will really hear if you are playing correct.

I am using a noisegate as well in my live rig, just because when I kick in the booster, there's a little unwanted background noise from the high gain. No cheating here mate smile.gif It's music, so anything is allowed wink.gif

if you use a peddle to quite noises, and that is cheating
would using a peddle to create noises(distortion , delay, etc.)be cheating ?
