I have an 8-string guitar. Naturally, after I bought this beast, I wanted to learn songs that incorporate it well. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do so because said songs are rather complicated, but I have been able to write some cool riffs here and there based in the Drop E tuning.

The problem I'm having is getting a low gain sound, while still retaining the tight feel of higher gain. Don't get me wrong, the silky-smooth, milky distortion is AMAZING, but I want to have the "djent" tone in my arsenal, and I haven't quite gotten it yet.

I have a decent amount of gear. It's listed as follows:

My signal chain:
Schecter Omen-8 (DiMarzio DiActivator Pickups) -> ENGL E530 Tube Preamp -> Peavey Classic 50/50 Power Amp -> Carvin 1x12 Micro Cab

Other Gear:
Line 6 POD Pro (The original one)
Ibanez Tube Screamer
Boss Compressor
MXR 10-band EQ

I was thinking about using the tube screamer in front of my preamp to make it sound tighter, and the MXR in the FX loop to get an extra mid-boost. I can't really try this at the moment, because my pedals are at a different house, but would this work the way I hope? I KNOW that the Line 6 can get a very djenty tone on it's own, but I don't like the idea of using solid-state in my rig mostly because the only tone I CAN get out of that thing is djent. Don't get me wrong, it's a badass preamp, but you get what you pay for, and I only paid $200 for it. Floorboard included. It's also got a lot of that solid state sound in it and it's just all-in-all not a great modeler compared to an HD. Anyone looking to buy it? tongue.gif $180 board included. wink.gif

In all honesty, I'm stumped, though. I've heard BK Pickups would get me an amazing djent tone, but I'm not all too convinced that new pickups would give me THAT much of a difference. Sure, the sound might be slightly more compressed, but I'm stuck on the DiActivators because of their milky tone. Like I said, the tone I do get is amazing, I just wanna play some math metal. XD

First off, that tight sound you are talking about is in your fingers, not your gear. Misha Mansoor could pick up most any guitar with any pickups and amp and make it sound something like that, his picking technique is extremely precise.

As for a good low gain sound, Its all about a strong and heavy attack to produce the clear sound. Bareknuckle's are good, but they are not the be all end all, as they dont do everything like people make it seem. Plus the price is extremely high. Tight sounds are all in your hands, getting the attack to be strong, and quick. For the abnormal start stop stuff that sounds robotic, thats all post editing and no one can actually play it. High gain or low gain, tightness can easily be in both. Adding the tubescreamer will make it a bit more clear in certain areas, and cut the 4-6k range with that EQ. Electric guitars sound disgusting in that area, especially distorted.

I wont mention any equipment because it seems the actual tonal characteristics are not the issue and you are happy with your tone, you just want a tighter sound. In this respect, its going to be in technique and some mixing/ production tricks.

Actually, if you have maybe a small clip of a song, a reaper project file or something you could send me them and I could see if I could whip up some examples using just basic plugins for the mix. Sometimes its a bit lengthy to explain in words

I'll give it a shot to get a recording up on SoundCloud, if that would work? If not, all I'd be able to send you is an Ableton Live 8 Set file. It wouldn't be for a day or two, though. I left my recording gear at a different house.

You could just send a wav file of just you playing some riffs, and I could work with that, as long as there was no other instrument.

Hey man, The Uncreator has spotted and stated a lot of true things wink.gif Now, as he said the tone is in your hands - of course a noise gate pedal helps and I wouldn't put that EQ in the FX loop, but in front as it is a tone correction device, not an effect, in my opinion.

BKP are hot stuff, but I am also sure that this 8 string packs a punch as it is right now - start exploring - I mean, I don't think that with a setup like yours, you can go wrong on a djenty tone.

Try the SCREAMER with the volume at 80 percent and drive very low about 20 before the ENgl for distortion then use something one of your amps for just clean power. See what you think smile.gif
