Well, typically it's one or more of something like

1.)Mobility - You can bring all your rack gear around in one chunk to recording, gigs, etc. Bringing them one by one is a huge pain

2.)Ease of use - Keeping all the buttons in one spot, and stacking them in order of signal flow helps keep it straight.

3.)Protection - A nice rack (SKB, Gator) can be water/air tight and really provide great protection on the road.

4.)Spiffness - Looks cool as a bonus

I've always don't pedals/boards, and have never messed with rack gear. Any advantages, over individual pedals and effects?

I've always don't pedals/boards, and have never messed with rack gear. Any advantages, over individual pedals and effects?

In some cases, it's just a different form factor (rack vs pedal) but in some cases rack gear is more pricey and uses nicer bits. Also, not every piece comes as a stomp. The Peavey Rock Master tube preamp for example, was only ever a rack unit. Speaking of I just added one to my RACK along with a DBX compressor.

Here is a pic of my live rack, this is the version that I am using when we have our full backline with us, there is another version which is smaller, only 4 units high, this version only has the Axe FX, the Furman and my wireless system, I am using that one when we fly and therefor can't take the full production with us. By the way, the drawer is for my MFC 101 and there is a second Tripple Rectifer / Rectocab setup on stage when we have the full backline with us, you just canb't see them on this pic :-) And my guitars are missing too

NICE!!! And a great example of how you can get rick of a rack full of gear with a single piece like the axe effects.

MARCUS: Are you using the axe fx for gain/distortion or just for delays reverbs etc? Also, do you go

AXE FX > MESSA

or is the axe fx on fx loop?

It depends, sometimes I use it only for effects like chorus, reverb and delay, in this case it is in the loop of my Rectifers, on other occasions I am only using the Axe FX, in that case I am using full patches incl. Amp, Cab, Mic and all effects, with the Axe FX going straight into the pa. I am never using it to add any gain or distortion to my Rectifiers though, the heads offer more than enough It is either Rectifier with effects from the Axe FX, or Axe Fx only.
