Attending My First Kenjutsu Workshop Options

Hey guys! I am all excited about this Sunday I am participating at a seminar/ workshop, organized by my Sensei, based on the comparative approach on three great sword schools:

Taisha Ryu Kenpo - founded by Marune Kurando and closely linked to the Shinobi, which are the Ninja as we know them

Kashima Shinto Ryu - founded by Tsukahara Bokuden

and last but never the least...

Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu - founded by the great Miyamoto Musashi himself!

I understood that there are many seemingly resembling techniques between the three schools, even though they are totally different!

Can't wait Hope I didn't bore you to death with all these names, but I am very enthusiastic about it and I just wanted to share the joy

Awesome! I love the martial arts (guitar will forever by my first Kung Fu). I've studied Wing Chun Kung Fu and now have been studying Shaolin Kung Fu... haven't done much weapon play yet. Have fun with the swords

Metaldan, I did wing chun for a while my instructor was a 62 yr old chinese man, I was really bad at it and small chinese women (aren't they all) kept kicking my ass.

Thank you Bogdan Well, all of the schools above are sword based indeed, but they are Samurai schools - only the first one being a related with Ninjutsu.

I am indeed taking my light set to the dojo because Sensei was thinking about making some pics and maybe some vids, but anyway, I am not in the posture to show anything regarding my skills YET I hope to shoot the seminar on the 2nd of December. That's when my grade exam will take place

My dojo also has Wing Chun as a form of martial art which is taught there Without the small Chinese women though

Kenjutsu is basically the actual killing techniques a soldier or samurai would learn and Kendo was a version of that developed for sporting combat.. basically the difference between jujutsu and judo. Anything with 'jutsu' on the end means 'techniques' or 'art of' and anything with 'do' on the end means 'the way of'. The 'do' disciplines were a later shift to a more rounded, safer, way of life discipline (something that could be introduced into the education system. ) So a lot of the dangerous techniques were removed and the emphasis shifted away from combat and more towards 'improving one's character through the arts' which was supposed to enhance mind, body etc.. However, 'jutsu' were all literally about the techniques to be used.

It was MORE THAN AWESOME! And as a plus Sensei cooked sushi for the whole crew!

I got to understand the technique of the 'flowing blocking' if I may translate the term like that - it is called Uke Nagashi and we analyzed it in 6 forms of kata - 2 for each school.

Each 2 katas had a tachi version and a kodachi version, that literally means 'long sword' and 'short sword' and at the end, as a 'desert' we had the 7th one which deals with Musashi's 2 sword technique. It is incredibly difficult to master and I utterly felt incapable of understanding it. It's just not the time I guess. The others were also difficult but this last one... that Musashi was something. Really something!

I am uber hyped and tired as hell after 8 hours of fencing but I feel very happy after this experience and humbled at the same time It feels good to learn, that's for certain!

As an interesting side note.. the Japanese word use for blocks, 'Uke', means 'to receive'. The original Japanese terminology is probably better than the Westerner's terminology of 'block'. The idea was originally that these moves were meant to receive the attack and either deflect it or use the motion etc.. just like you said.. 'flowing'.
