Hey there wink.gif

Do you know when you are in the guitar store, trying out a new guitar, or when playing music with new people you have just met, you have plugged in the guitar and everyone looks at you. The volume is high and you are not really comfortable with the tone wink.gif

What do you play to warm up/showoff:D
Starting shredding just doesnt feel right biggrin.gif

I always play Into the Storm by Gamma Ray.
That's simple and extremley effective, so it's great to show off your "skills" for non guitar players biggrin.gif
Also, since I have played it on almost every guitar I've tried, it's a lot easier for me to compare guitars with than with any other riffs or random improvising.

As someone who has worked in a music store, please, please, just don't play

1.)Stairway to Heaven
2.)Enter Sandman
3.)Rock You Like a Hurricane
4.)Smoke on the Water
5.)Anything by Van Halen or Pearl Jam.

You know, the "Classics" smile.gif

Instead, maybe play

Gamma Ray, anything by Meshuggah, Atheist, Cynic, Blind Guardian or Periphery.

I still do work in a Music Shop!! I could add quite a few songs to this list!!!
Sultans of Swing, Voodoo Chile, Walk this Way, Paranoid, any Nirvana etc!!!!
biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm quite lucky at the Shop though, I have a little room out the back where i do repairs and Set-ups etc and so don't get the full force of all the Noodlers!!!

I'm so uncomfortable playing in a store with people that I play an amp really really low so I can just hear it. If test an amp I take my friend and make him test it all out while I fiddle with controls.

The stores know to turn up the amp... this is one of the keys for a quality tone on an amp, no matter what you play. Beginners normally turn it down, i use to... however, if turned down too much you will find the tone becomes muffed and loses quality at low volumes. Most amps have this issue, which is why some have a push/pull volume to change the wattage. Lower watts means better quality at lower volumes, high wattages actually means it would sound much better cranked way up!

In a guitar store:

1) I would first check if in tune, some are really bad at this, giving you a guitar where the strings are out of tune and action is far to high, etc. Take a few secs to get use to the feel of the neck and adjust it or get them to adjust it for you. Nothing is worst than playing a poorly setup guitar and amp.

2) Adjust the tone to something you want, or get them to adjust it for you.

3) Just play around riffs and stuff you know, I tend to mix it up and just play random stuff and create my own solos. Most comfortable with this and then can move onto an actual song - see if they can guess it!

I like something which build up over time and have various styles of playing to test out on. Repeating makes it easy. Changing tones and effects during a song is hard however. Add in the whammy/effects only if comfortable.

Basic popular songs like Ac/Dc, Crazy Train, Metallica, Iron Maiden are always good to play, but probably heard a million times already. Green Day might be a good pick for something simple, but not very ranged. Avenged Sevenfold has a good mix.

I tend to attempt to showoff many different styles. Maybe lay into some classic "BB King riffage" with the cleans, then kick on the gain channel and shred out some Contra or Double Dragon (Nintendo songs), then hit Cosmin's "Vivaldi: Winter Arpeggios" lesson with some gain, and back to clean for some country chicken pickin' and lap-steel style bends!!
