I'm a big IBBY fan as you guys know smile.gif I often get questions about what the heck all the different nomenclature means on their necks. Theres the Original WIZARD (My fave) Wizard II, Wizard III, Jem, Ultra, etc. In short, The WIZARD series has similar neck profile. Thin/fast but II and III are bit thicker as the original Wizards would snap under heavy gauge strings during too much dive bombing since they had 1 MILLIMETER of wood separating the truss rod inside the neck from the rest of the world. That's just crazy.

Jem necks (Steve Vai had a hand in these and they are pretty darn brilliant IMHO) have a flatted back which makes them a bit smoother/faster in general. (But of course, Yngwie plays a baseball batt e.g. fender strat, and does fine)

Ultra necks are more traditional and rarely used outside the custom shop. They feel more like a les paul neck to me. Here is a pic from Ibanez from waaay back in the day that I found online that may help.

These necks, heck these guitars ARE NOT EVERYONE"S CUP OF TEA, SOME FOLKS HATE EM! YNGWIE FOR ONE! but some folks dig em quite a bit. Like me smile.gif They don't pay me to say nice things about them, I have no relationship with them. I'm just a fan.

??????QUESTION??????

*WHATS YOUR FAV GUITAR MAKER AND WHY?

Awesome post/find, and thanks for the info! I'm just not starting to explore Ibanez electrics, and have been looking for a MIJ RG500, or similar, to try out. I have played a Jem, because our second guitarist in EMULATOR plays one. In fact, his sounded and played so amazingly that I wanted to try some others.

When you find YOUR neck, you just KNOW it! That's why I bought my Parker. The tone beat out my strat, but the neck just felt amazing! I was able to perform intense EMULATOR runs much easier from the first minute I played it. Then I modified the tone to my tastes, with a Gibson 335 pickup in the neck (thick, lush jazz tone! Screams too!)

Anyway, it seems like there may also be "my" Ibanez....I just have to find it!

I've never had a chance to play an Ibanez. I know a whole lot of folks who swear by them and have not heard a bad word about them. I will have to head to the guitar shop this weekend and try out some of these necks. I've always been a Strat guy but I'm not afraid to try new things. Never know, I might like it.

They look tiny compared to Tyler necks!

Tyler standard neck 1st fret thickness .845 12th fret thickness .975

Wizard neck 1st fret thickness .669 12th fret thickness .787

I have small fingers but I think the wizard neck would bring on hand cramps really quickly

Good choice! An MIJ (Made in Japan) RG 5xx series, or RG 7XX series (If you want a 7 string) would be great to have in any guitar collection. The MIJ RG 5 series are a bit crazy pricey on ebay these days, since they have the ultra rare and no longer available original WIZARD neck. My fav Neck ever. Even with the frets worn to a nub, people are still asking 3, 4, 5 even 6 hundred bux for some of these.

If you can find a Music store or pawn shop, with an old RG in the back that nobody seems to realize is valuable, thats a great way to go. Thats how I got my 560. It was still $300 and that was around 10 years ago at which point it was already nearly 10 years old. So these are "Vintage" axes.

The PARKER guitars are truly amazing. I just got hip to them in the past couple of years believe it or not. They are a bit rare in music stores here for some reason. They have a really nice one near by and it plays like a dream. The neck is arrow straight and the string to fret gap is almost the exact same all the way down the neck which is just amazing. It actually sorta felt like a vintage ibby!

Todd

BTW, just did a quick check and here are some MIJ RG550 models on ebay. It's almost shocking how much value these guitars have retained after this much time. Keep in mind these were mid range at best, even when new. Not high end guitars. But they play so well, that fanatics like, well, me, keep the prices high.

Ain't this the truth. I've had more guitars in my possession than I should have, because it was a lot of wasted cash. I've had an ESP-LTD, Gibson, Schecter, Washburn, BC Rich, PRS, Dean, Ibanez, and MusicMan.

2 years ago I hit up Guitar Center and the assistant manager of the store picked up a MusicMan JP? (We don't know the exact model other than its a family ball reserve). He's like dude check this thing out you may like it. I just played a few chords, a couple of licks, let my friend try it, and gave it back. I was sad to let it go because it felt like it was made for me. Well few months ago I went into Guitar Center and I seen a used MusicMan. Picked up and played it, I'm sitting there like could this be that very same guitar? Assistant manager walked out just then. Oh dude whats up? I was like by any chance is this? Yup that was mine, needed to get a better down payment for a house. Lets just say I sold my half-stack to pick it up. I don't regret that at all to this day, I smile every time I pickup the guitar as I jam.

What model Ibanez do you have? Is the Neck an original Wizard? I even like the Wizard II and III even though they are a tad thicker, they still play great smile.gif
