I recently watched UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US, again on youtube and wanted to share the vid in case anyone hadn't seen it. It is a documentary about the violent history of Black Metal and that troubled time when crazy kids in Norway were setting things on fire and engaging in violence, and making some Metal music along the way. The music that came out of this scene (While not my thing personally) has had an ENORMOUS impact on Metal/Heavy Music in general and continues to this day. Let me know what you think smile.gif

I know about this events and bands but I haven't seen this doc! I have a unique/weird feeling every time I read or see something about this scene... I like it but I hate it... blink.gif

Todd this is so weird. I swear I was on YT the other night looking for a decent documentary on Norwegian BM and the events surrounding it.

This isn't the first time we've had this Trans Atlantic telepathy going on.... biggrin.gif

I will give this a watch, thank you.

I went through bit of a BM phase when I was in my late teens and I still go back now and again and listen to the stuff that stood out the most. I actually hauled out a couple of my old Mayhem albums.. I recommend the album 'Chimera' for some truly mind melting guitar work.

For some reason I like listening to extreme music when I draw, I find it calming. huh.gif

That's the "GMC EFFECT" a mystical connecting force that connects all GMCers!!! (NOT Midichlorians!)

Oddly, I was on YT around the same time looking for similar stuff when I ran across this one again smile.gif "Let Go Luke!!"

I really dig some elements of Black Metal guitar, and it's been used now in "Non Satanic" music called "Blackened Metal" which is just metal using some Black Metal elements but leaving out the bits about Satan and and crosses, and such. Taking the music and leaving behind much of the theatrics. Theatrics are great and all, but in the end it's really about cool music smile.gif

You can hear bits of Black Metal inspired playing all over the place in Metal these days and I sometimes catch myself doing it as well, But everything we take in sort of mixes together and comes out MUSIC which is cool smile.gif

Todd

Almost forgot! Here is another very spiff shorter doc (in 5 smaller chunks featuring The lead singer of Gorgoth generally bewildering a bunch of American journalists who just don't seem to get it/him). He really does have a very profound philosophy which can be broken down in part to "Are you listening to the truth in your heart, or are you just a pile of guilt and BullS**T masquerading as a man?"

They even visit the small shed his grandparents lived in on the highest peak in the area, built by bringing up one bit of wood at a time. Now that's Metal smile.gif Of course, the hike up the hill almost killed the journalists.

Posted just after the Witching hour smile.gif

always prefered Satanic Death metal, cos' they've got some serious chops...Never been much into Black Metal, guess it was too commercialized for me... 90% of black metal music is funny , but there're some great bands like Emperor.. What i like in black metal is actually more atmosphere than music...

In fact there's one Norway former black metal guy from Bergen, i bet he can tell us more about BM culture and lifestyle cool.gif

I was always interested in the musical extremity and atmosphere too, not the activities or beliefs of those guys. But yeah, check out some of the guitar work of Blasphemer of Mayhem. He uses a lot of dissonant chords and diminished sounding stuff but his chops are amazing.. his rhythm playing is unbelievably tight.

what is the music scene like in those areas today, does norway still have such an intense metal scene?

We could use some input from some GMCers living in Norway on this smile.gif But the scene itself, from what I gather, is alive and well.

I think some people shouldn't forget that despite its history with satanism and anti-religious nature, a lot of black metal speaks quite profoundly and poetically about Earth, spirits, and the mind - A lot of very deep and inspiring stuff can be found.

spent the entire weekend immersed in norwegian black metal ohmy.gif just went and bought the 20th anniversary edition of Darkthrones ' a blaze in the northern sky'. not really my type of music but there's something about it that really fascinates me. It honestly took me a bit of time to get past the initial overall sound but the atmosphere and chords etc are really cool.

Im looking at getting the book - Lords of chaos anyone read it, or similar books?

I've got it.. it's very extensive and well detailed. Also quite depressing in many places but worth a read. smile.gif

I remember when I bought a Darkthrone album, 'Under a Funeral Moon'.. I knew they were supposed to be really Lo-Fi but I wasn't too impressed and never listened to it more than a couple of times. rolleyes.gif

Just some of the descriptions of the everyday activities and attitudes of some of the main people.. some of the things Vikernes says about Euronymous, if they're true, make for bit of a disturbing read. But then again, considering the rivalry between a lot of these guys you have to take it with a pinch of salt.

Definitely worth a read though. I had to order it specially from a book store ! That was years ago now... probably not long after it came out. I bought it after reading about it in Kerrang (you remember that magazine that used to cover metal ?) tongue.gif

Here's a song I've been digging a lot lately.. just listen to that bass !!

oh indeed ohmy.gif production on this is much better than the BM stuff Ive been listening to lately. That bass is brilliant, what type of effect(s) d'ya think they have put on it?

LOL@Kerrang, Ive not picked up a copy for donkeys, Im guessing they have mellowed!
The last time I bought a kerrang I was gutted to see that pandora peroxide had gone brunette huh.gif
