Well, there's this unsheathing action in Iaido/ Batto Jutsu, in which you push the tsuba (the sword's guard) with your thumb in order to have a fast unsheathing of the sword.

Thing is that, a lot of folks hold their thumb parallel and above the blade which is a very silly thing to do, especially if you are a beginner - results? Instant cut on the inside of your thumb. The correct approach, is based on holding your thumb on the right side of the tsuba and blade, so when you push the tsuba and draw, the blade goes out of the saya (scabbard) right between your thumb and the rest of your fingers.

I just learned this thing a few weeks ago and I'm always careful when practicing even with the bokken (wooden sword) as everything you learn will stay with you when you use a real blade (shinken) and presto, your thumb could be gravely damaged, out of sheer carelessness!

Oh man that sounds like a dangerous practise !! huh.gif

Not at all - but if you have poor technique or if you just happen to have a really sharp katana at home and you want to draw just like the guys in Akira Kurosawa movies, without the proper training, you're in for a really nasty thumb cut.

A guitarist should not play World of Warcraft while the intro for the show is already running and a nervous tech is wating with a Les Paul in his hands, while the guitarplayer says something about "just this one mob..." ^^
PS: Yes, I actually made it on stage in time, and I was not the only one playing that long ;-)

Before going onstage I am usually not thinking about anything else - that's not good either because I get kind of nervous... More than I should be after all this time laugh.gif But hey, it's only normal to feel stuff before performing I guess smile.gif

He should also NOT let other band members close the car door over their finger, before a concert.
Fortunately I was fast enough so it only caught the tip of my finger and lucky enough to be my left hand thumb. smile.gif

Man that happened to me many years ago!!! I got in a car and a friend of mine slammed the door! My whole right hand got messed up all 4 fingers! It was so bad!!!! I couldn't sleep for a few days because of pain! Thank God there was no major injuries but my fingernails were black for like a month and I couldn't play guitar!!! Be careful with car doors!
