I actually spoke to her about teaching her some basic moves so that I may be able to spar at home without my kenjutsu mates laugh.gif

That would work, teach her some basics for self defense would be good too.

Well, yes running works but I mean even before that. Most people teach self defence as just a physical response to a problem but self defence should really incorporate everything about how you live your life.

Self defence as a subject is a lot bigger than physical action. Defence is avoiding harm, so in that spirit self defence starts before a confrontation even happens. When you leave your house, is your Zanshin working ?

The places you go.. do you lock your car doors immediately when you get inside if you're in an urban area, things like that. If you see you a dark alley in front of you, do you take it or do you go the long way around knowing that it's well lit ? If you see a load of rowdy people on your side of the street do you cross over and keep walking, remaining inconspicuous ? Self defence is really all about avoidance. If you're trading blows then you're in a fight. Unfortunately, most people only see the 'fight' as self defence.. in reality it's the one aspect of self defence you don't want to be in. I only view stuff this way because I did a lot of reading and research when I started karate because I'm one of those guys who really gets into something properly.. as a result I probably have a better attitude towards self defence than most people who have practised MA for years because they don't bother to keep educating themselves.. that's the great thing about being a beginner, you've got an open mind. I recommend reading around on this site.. this is the stuff that MA school should teach but don't teach because they don't know it..

http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/AreMASD.htm

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with MA but a school should openly say exactly what it is teaching.. if it's to learn an 'art' and get the benefit of enjoyment, fitness and personal fulfilment out of it, then that's excellent. But if a school makes a claim to teach self defence then they should be teaching you the type of stuff in that article above. smile.gif

I agree with Ben, I've never had a fight in my life (there have been a few incidents due to my own stupidity when younger but nothing serious and I have only been hit once). I just make sure I'm aware of my environment, avoid any possible dodgy areas, or at least carry myself in a confident manner and aware where all the roads lead.

I've managed to talk a few situations down too

Sometime things happen and they are unavoidable due to no fault of your own, I've been lucky in that respect. With the gun and knife culture nowadays it's a very worrying situation if it occurs
