Song Idea... Options

Hey guys,

I thought I would throw this out there. It's a song I am working on and I thought I would see if anyone wished to throw an idea on top of it. What I was planning on doing was adding a melody guitar track in the style of something Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle might do, which would make the current rhythm guitar more of a bass line.

I think the cymbals in this are annoying and I need to figure out how to turn them down in the mix, using EZDrummer through Logic, and I am an absolute beginner with both these programs, had them for less than a week.

This is an unintentional tune, I had put a drum beat into a track and looped it just to come up with some parts. 2 guitar parts emerged, and not necessarily the overall feel of what I like (being more of a Tool fan) but I am determined to finish this.

Anyway, the structure is intro > verse > bridge > verse > bridge > chorus > solo > chorus > intro > outro thingy

Hey mate! I am a big fan of Tool and APC so I have to place my 2 cents here

I think you started out very well, but in order to transform this into a more developed idea, you should work a bit more on the dynamics - everything is pretty linear right now and you should variate the grooves a bit so that the piece will evolve to the next level. Have you thought about any vocal lines already?

Thanks for your input Cosmin and I agree with you, about it being too linear. Personally I have not done anything for it lyrically or even considered a vocal harmony at this point. I put it out there to one of my vocalist friends hoping that it would sort of cast a new dynamic to it. I think where my main problem is just playing over the single drum beat originally then kind of forcing those beats into position. For me the nonlinearness of a song is easier to accomplish with a real drummer. It's the reason I decided to post this idea, because I almost feel like I've hit a wall as to how to pull this out of the mundane steadiness of it.

BTW, I have the same Ibanez Baritone that you use, I'll shoot you a PM in a bit.

Hi Spock, great melodies here. Cosmin's already said about varying things to keep it interesting. Perhaps a change of key would be good for a bridge ?

For the solo, I think you have the chords G, G#, D#, A# ? If you wondered what scale you can use over that you could use the G Phrygian Mode. Not Phrygian Major, just normal Phrygian.

This would be the same as:
G# Lydian (which corresponds to the second chord)
D# Major (3rd chord)
A# Mixolydian (4th chord)

So you could view each chord changes as a separate mode but they all share the same notes so it's just as easy to think of it as just one of those

Thanks for the input gentlemen. Wow, Ben, I wish I understood I have just never learned that stuff, hoping to eventually learn it all here. I just emailed Cosmin telling him I don't even know the notes on the fretboard but have ordered some stickers to go under the strings to help me out.

But I do understand this, i guess I have never thought of thinking of it like this but it makes absolute sense...

A Perfect Circle?? Tool??? Cool influences!! One of my two tattoos is inspired by APC.

I like how this composition is evolving, there are some parts like the Tool style irregular riffs and when the lead guitar plays melodies that are very outstanding, then you have that problem that Cosmin said about being too linear, so I think that you have to work a bit more on dynamics and arrangements, (also drum rhythms) to make the whole thing interesting.

And also... nice guitars!!

If you go through the chords you'll usually find that they share a lot of common notes so in many cases, 1 scale will work over most, if not all, chords.

To drop the Cymbals a bit there's a mixer built into EZDrummer, open it and you can adjust things from there! The Cymbals aren't on their own track so you'll have to use the 'Overhead' and 'Room' channel sliders.

You know, I am not sure? I am pretty dang sure I purchased Custom 24s, but I can't remember it's been so long. That silver one was the last one I got back in 2007, and it was $2,250.00 from Guitar Center. I am wanting to sell it and get a Les Paul (I'm thinking), but I have had to email PRS about it with the serial number to get their specs on it, as there are no markings. Heck, I just liked the way it looked and felt.

Do you know PRS specs enough to get a read on this? Or what I should ask for it?

Ummmm, if it's what you want I wouldn't swap a PRS for a Gibson, just because I can't get along with Gibson guitars that good But, since you wrote on this matter in your thread as well, I will answer there
