Hey man, welcome to GMC! This looks like an interesting pedal but, why this one and not the Ibanez TS 808 or something else? What makes this one stand out, in your opinion? I am asking because I've never tried them Thanks. I use the Klon on all the time when I'm playing live. I don't use it much at home unless I'm recording an aggressive solo or something. What it does better then anything else is to take your existing sound and make it sound much bigger and more powerful - not more distorted. It's not a very good overdrive, but as a non-transparent boost I have never heard anything better. In the issue of full disclosure, when it came out it was stupid expensive for my budget ($230) but I heard it one time and I had to have one. I was working at a store in Boston at the time while I was in college right near the Berklee guitar dept building and we couldn't keep them in stock. You have to remember this was at a time when there were not many booteek pedals. They have gotten stupid expensive, but there is a new one out called Klon KTR that sounds pretty much the same and is back to about the original price. I have one of those as well. It gets a lot of hate because people will sell them for $2000 or something but honestly it's something you have to try to believe rather then rely on videos or forum hype. I do use an 808 and combined with the Klon it sounds amazing. I like the Maxon 808 because to my ears it's a little cleaner and the low end is a little tighter. When I bought mine (about 2003/4) they were about the same price. Before that I used the old TS-10 for years. That's a tough question but If I had to pick a favorite though, as in would hate to be w/out it ... Maxon AD-80 delay and/or a Peterson 'strobo stomp'. Sorry, that's two.
And related to this ... Thanks. I use the Klon on all the time when I'm playing live. I don't use it much at home unless I'm recording an aggressive solo or something. I used to use a 'gold horsie man' Klon in the 90's. I sold it when I saw I could get 400 % return on it. I purchased a new KTR last december. My entire rig has changed since I had the original Klon so I can't really say if it's exactly the same or not. It basically does what I remember - ? I too rarely ever mention it 'on the internet' because it's such a polemic topic on line. It's one of those things that you have to use live, on a gig, with your rig for it to reveal what it can do for you. Which, for the most part, is just two things: 1) 'more' of whatever you got and 2) the ability to let you cut through a dense mix without necessarily getting louder. At home, playing solo - you wouldn't think anything special about it. I take it to almost every gig. (i see even the KTR's are now going for double what they originally cost just 6 mos ago, lol!)
