Hello Guys and Gals.

I have noticed that Facebook has recently killed my reach. My facebook page posts are reaching well under a 100 people out of the over 3000 following. I would hope for at least a tenth of the number (300). Facebook is all moneybags now. They want you to promote your stuff, but I don't have the money to do that!

We haven't released anything yet, but I was hoping updates would rip through the EdgeRank that Facebook uses. Heck, my Mayones/Duncan competition entry got more views and likes than my updates.

So I was thinking about Twitter. Is the reach any better? Or is it even necessary? Any bands here have experience with this? Do you find that you have the same followers on Twitter than Facebook and not any new ones? People just aren't seeing my posts. And I'm worried that when we release the single no one will really see it. Thoughts?

Brandon

Yeah, you can reach only a max of about 11% of your followers unless you pay for it now on FB. You can reach more people if a lot of your fans share a post/link, so that helps get the numbers up a bit.

If you post pictures with your updates that gets around that rule a bit and you can reach more than the 11% with a photo and link/comment.

I find FB fans are more engaged, but I reach more people on Twitter so it's a trade off. I tend to do both and Google + just to try and reach as many people as I can with an announcement etc.

I use facebook a lot with my band and as Matt said, the key is that your fans share your publications, that's the only way to reach more people without paying. We are not using Twitter too much, so the quantity of fans is very lower by now.

Main advice for the whole 'people not seeing your stuff' is to just start a mailing list.

Email is such a direct form of communication online compared to a facebook page. And hypothetically speaking, what if Facebook dies out like Myspace? You'd still be able to send your 'followers' updates, new singles etc. with email.

Offering free downloads with email through Bandcamp is a quick and easy way to build a mailing list.

That being said, you should still start a twitter, just cause it's another way to connect with people.

I think once you've got your E.P recorded and ready things might get easier, what you need to do then is get a Internet 'Street Team' together. They can post on facebook and forums that they are part of bringing your EP to others attention. Obviously they need an incentive but it can be anything like limited edition artwork, Tshirt etc, though you've obviously got people like us here to help.

Don't forget music blogs too, lots of people review and get word out.

I agree. I teach Self Promotion for musicians at College and I focus on websites and newsletter mailing lists. The students don't believe me when I say they are the two most important things for a musician to have these days. But once they start them, and start using them, they get into and get good results. Email and having your own website that you control, and won't go away like Myspace, are must haves for the modern musician.

LAME EH???? You've hit the nail on the head. Bottom line, Facebook share price (common stock) is in the crapper, so they are going all out to "monetize" their huge user base and as a result have seriously "Corporatized" all of the "Social" aspects of their formerly cool site, turning it IMHO In to mostly CRAP.

So now, it's "PAY TO PLAY", which puts you up against big companies with deep pockets if you want your posts to show up in the news feeds of folks that might actually want to see it!

This is usually around the time a backlash starts brewing and the door opens to a new service that knocks the King off the roost. Remember MYSPACE? It was king of the hill for a while too smile.gif I"m not saying facebook is going to go away next week. Just that the shift to corporatization and abandoning what made it cool is sowing the seeds of it's eventual downfall. I don't know what service will replace it, but something will smile.gif

ON TO TWITTER!!

Twitter is fine and dandy for what it is. But here is the real SECRET SAUCE!!!!

www.hootsuite.com

It allows you to post once and have it go to ALL, yes ALL Of your social media outlets. In addition you can SCHEDULE Your posts so that you can make several posts and have them scheduled to go out whenever you want, later that day, that week, that month, so your posts are more evenly spread and they have great analytics!!

Thanks again, guys. And Todd, that was also a great insight! Thanks. I am going to bookmark thread so I can refer back to it. I already registered a website at Weebly a while back, but I haven't used it yet.

Don't forget BANDCAMP www.bandcamp.com which is a very handy resource for musicians. Developing a mailing list is also a very good idea. People use the web differently than they used to, but having your own presense on the web is still important. Even if folks use it as a jumping off point to your social media (facebook/twitter) it's a good idea to stake a claim/url smile.gif and brand your email as well so your [email protected] instead of [email protected]

Ok, I will do that. However, I would also like to make exclusive posts to Twitter as well, so maybe more followers will arise. Anyway, it just personalizes it better.

Use both.

The best thing you can do is to have both, and connect the two accounts. This way you can use Twitter for small updates, and those tweets will still be posted on your Facebook page as well. Use Facebook for bigger updates or just longer ones.

Reach is always going to be a problem with social media because you don't control it, but things like linking accounts and being present everywhere help a lot. For one of my bands, we get an average of 300 people seeing out posts (we have 405 likes). This is because we link the two accounts.

Another beneficial thing would be to have a band Instagram if applicable. That way any of you can upload pictures of what the band is doing and share them - again, linked to both Facebook and Twitter - with your fans.

Lastly, know your audience. Posts with pictures get the most views/likes/comments, statistically. Even if you don't have much to say, try posting a picture with it. Or, if you've got a lot to say, try posting a picture that summarizes it. For example we just started recording our EP, so I put together a long post explaining where we are as a band, what we'll be doing, what the EP will be like, a thank you to all our supporters and so on. But, I posted it with a picture of gear in my small home studio (where we are doing the whole EP) with a caption that said "We're Recording!". Short, sweet, and if people wanted to know more all they need to do is click the "See More" button to see the rest of the message.

Also, check out the Insight feature on your Facebook page. See what people liked and didn't like, learn from those statistics!!

I've got some buddies in a few different bands and they've always said that Twitter was better for promotion.

The reTweeting really helps I think.

To be honest, "exclusive" post to a hand few of followers will probably not make a huge impact, but your thinking along the right lines in trying to create content that is proprietary for a given distribution channel, in this case twitter. But before that stuff can have any impact, you need to get the numbers up. That is an art in itself and the rules change in real time so being adaptable is key.

Myspace and then Facebook (as well as youtube) worked great for my bands marketing! We never used tweeter much as it just didn't pick up in my country in general. I think that nowadays every musician should use internet and social media to his advantage. Possibilities of impact are endless and just think of it like this - if you make a Youtube video that 1 million people see, hey that is like filling dozens of stadiums across the world. Rules of the game really changed a lot - now everyone can get exposure and be famous if he brings something cool and unique out there. Before, you would need to go through editors and several people (TV station editors for example) would decide your fate...

Back to the question - I would definitely go for all the outlets you can. Try to come up with a strategy for promotion, write personalized and unique yet engaging posts, publish beautiful music and yes - people will follow! smile.gif

One more thing - when we played gigs and everything, everything would come in small numbers in return. Even when thousand's people would hear us at the concert - our goal was to get at least 1-2 fans out of all those people. This is the key to build a following - start slow and try to win over individual people. Once they start following you (become fans) - they spread the word and it slowly grows and you never know where it leads. For example our songs were played by those fans at lunch breaks at schools etc - its amazing, we never anticipated that.
