I use facebook a lot with my band and as Matt said, the key is that your fans share your publications, that's the only way to reach more people without paying. We are not using Twitter too much, so the quantity of fans is very lower by now.

I think once you've got your E.P recorded and ready things might get easier, what you need to do then is get a Internet 'Street Team' together. They can post on facebook and forums that they are part of bringing your EP to others attention. Obviously they need an incentive but it can be anything like limited edition artwork, Tshirt etc, though you've obviously got people like us here to help.

LAME EH???? You've hit the nail on the head. Bottom line, Facebook share price (common stock) is in the crapper, so they are going all out to "monetize" their huge user base and as a result have seriously "Corporatized" all of the "Social" aspects of their formerly cool site, turning it IMHO In to mostly CRAP.
So now, it's "PAY TO PLAY", which puts you up against big companies with deep pockets if you want your posts to show up in the news feeds of folks that might actually want to see it! This is usually around the time a backlash starts brewing and the door opens to a new service that knocks the King off the roost. Remember MYSPACE? It was king of the hill for a while too  I"m not saying facebook is going to go away next week. Just that the shift to corporatization and abandoning what made it cool is sowing the seeds of it's eventual downfall. I don't know what service will replace it, but something will ON TO TWITTER!! Twitter is fine and dandy for what it is. But here is the real SECRET SAUCE!!!! www.hootsuite.com It allows you to post once and have it go to ALL, yes ALL Of your social media outlets. In addition you can SCHEDULE Your posts so that you can make several posts and have them scheduled to go out whenever you want, later that day, that week, that month, so your posts are more evenly spread and they have great analytics!! Don't forget BANDCAMP www.bandcamp.com which is a very handy resource for musicians. Developing a mailing list is also a very good idea. People use the web differently than they used to, but having your own presense on the web is still important. Even if folks use it as a jumping off point to your social media (facebook/twitter) it's a good idea to stake a claim/url

I've got some buddies in a few different bands and they've always said that Twitter was better for promotion.
The reTweeting really helps I think. |

Myspace and then Facebook (as well as youtube) worked great for my bands marketing! We never used tweeter much as it just didn't pick up in my country in general. I think that nowadays every musician should use internet and social media to his advantage. Possibilities of impact are endless and just think of it like this - if you make a Youtube video that 1 million people see, hey that is like filling dozens of stadiums across the world. Rules of the game really changed a lot - now everyone can get exposure and be famous if he brings something cool and unique out there. Before, you would need to go through editors and several people (TV station editors for example) would decide your fate...
Back to the question - I would definitely go for all the outlets you can. Try to come up with a strategy for promotion, write personalized and unique yet engaging posts, publish beautiful music and yes - people will follow! One more thing - when we played gigs and everything, everything would come in small numbers in return. Even when thousand's people would hear us at the concert - our goal was to get at least 1-2 fans out of all those people. This is the key to build a following - start slow and try to win over individual people. Once they start following you (become fans) - they spread the word and it slowly grows and you never know where it leads. For example our songs were played by those fans at lunch breaks at schools etc - its amazing, we never anticipated that. -------------------- For GMC support please email support (at) guitarmasterclass.net
