One thing that's been helping me is Marcus's 3 level lesson. I can play up to the advanced level, but the point isn't to play them up to speed (I mean, that is the point, but not the point I'm trying to explain here
) but to take three different takes on the same thing, and switch between them cleanly. One part in particular, first the advanced:

D-----------------------------------------------------------------------|

And the beginner:

G----------------------------------------------------|
D----------------------------------------------------|
A----------------------------------------------------|

So what I do basically, excluding the jump up to the 20th fret on the high e string in the advanced part, is switch between them and play the 10 13 12 10 12 13 pattern that is the same in both of them, but switch between playing the second part of the advanced one and the beginner one. The trick though, is that as soon as you finish the advanced one on the 12th fret B string, go right back to the pattern they both share without missing a beat. So it's basically like taking the second half of the beginner one, and putting it on the advanced lesson up to tempo etc, switching between them fluidly. Kind of a tongue twister for your fingers.
Now, I'm not saying, go practice exactly this, this is just an example of one thing that works for me. I'm just suggesting, find a short 2 or 3 part lick that you already know, change it up, and then work on it so that you can switch between both of them at your top speed.
