Whoa this one sounds crazy Can't figure it out just yet Hint: Don't think 'complicated'. Try to distance yourself from the chords and time sig. And remember, I'm just referencing the main melody 1:04 to 1:27. *Cosmin, Is the Vai (Juice) mixo with maybe a nat7 in there occasionally? Certaintly I'm not Cosmin, but to answer your question: when listening to the song, you can hear that Vais soloing isn't pure to any mode (and a lot solo-playing often isn't, that could quickly be kinda plain, wouldnt it?). He is mixing up between lydian and mixolydian, but when looking at the song as a whole, the song itself with the bass & chords, it's pretty mixolydian I think I'm only judging by ears, I can't play it Oh man, sorry Sollesnes! I mistaken thought Cosmin posted the Vai. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

The Vai generally sounds like Mixo but I swear I hear a natural 7th in there sometimes when he goes to the V chord. But anyway, the dominant sound is certainly 'dominant' on that track. Here's mine. Just the main melody. Not a full scale in the traditional western definition but guitarists will be familiar with it (that's a hint) and the guitarist and violinist do bend/slide almost to a major 3 at one point in the melody where the rest of it is minor 3rds (that's another hint). What makes this relatively simple scale sound so cool/weird in this context is the backing - both the chords as well as the time signature. Melody (scale) starts at 1:04 ... The melody ends at 1:27 and all bets are off at that point (though he does get back into it again and constantly revisits the original scale/mode ... in very obvious way once you know it). Extra credit for chords and time sig (multiple correct answers for the time sig) What, nobody? Come on - humor me Don't pay attention to the chords. Just pick out the notes in the 'lick/line' ... you'll get it, I swear. This is a great example of the harmony making the melody take on an exotic veneer. Think I'm hearing "blues scale" to my poorly trained ears And we have a winner! Yeah, it's just the E blues scale with one bend 'almost' to a G#/Ab - that's the slight major sound and it only happens for a 16th note near the end of the first bar of the melody. The main four bars of melody he plays in the 12th fret blues/minor penta box. Against the harmony the 'blue' notes - b3 G and the b5 Bb can sound majorish. *A lot of Mahavishnu melodies are derived from blues and mixo. Others would be Dance of Maya, Vital Transformation and Lila's Dance. When I realized this I was really blown away. Now for the exoticism - what time signature and what's the harmony underneath that E blues scale? This I'll grant you is neither typical nor obvious. Hints: McLaughlin likes to employ typical guitaristic devices i.e., open strings and moveable parallel chord shapes (in his unique way of course). The 'pulse' is 1/8 notes. 'Intro' as in the faux sitar chords - A5#4 to Asus?
It's a little weird because he's got the natural 4 and #4 in there ... Lydian/Dominant (lyd.b7) for the main melody? -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Bb Major or Ionian ? Close. Highland pipes are indeed Bb something (too big of hint if I tell) but this particular Jig is not in Bb. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine
