Over the years, I have learned and played a lot of cover songs with my band. We also relatively recently practiced for and played a private party kind of gig where we learned and practiced around 40-50 cover songs in just over a month of time.

Looking back now - I think I have forgot how to play the majority of these songs. Its kinda sad - those were such cool songs! smile.gif
Good thing is that if I were to learn them now again - it would be so much easier and I think I would refresh the learned stuff relatively easily.

How hard is for you to learn and remember new songs?
How easy it is for you to forget them? smile.gif

I don't think I've learnt a song in its entirety for about 10 years, and as a result my memory is terrible! As long as I've got the sheet music infront of me I'm fine, otherwise I'm screwed wink.gif

I'm not sure if remember is the correct term, but I can play them from hearing the melody. Specific riffs etc usually come back quickly.

There are several songs I used to know, but have forgotten how to play. Yet, there are many other songs that haven take their place. Funny that sometimes I forget how to play my own songs. biggrin.gif If I don't keep playing it, over time I will probably forget it.

I play in both covers and original bands - always have. And I too have a problem remembering everything ... when I'm away from the bandstand. I find that with the full band or at least having the lead vox there, most of it comes back to me.
Also, I need to be reminded of what songs I in fact do know. I keep a note in my wallet with a list of tunes that I 'know' but never remember that I know ... if that makes any sense?

I have played in a cover band many years and will probably remember the classics we played, since they usually consist of 4 chords biggrin.gif

Then I have a bunch of punk songs I can play all the way through.

When I jammed with a friend this weekend I was kinda surprised that I even remembered some german rock and punk songs I haven't played for at least 10 years.

Can't tell you a decent number though.

Ive totally forgot more full songs than I currently know how to play. Ive just started to make an effort to learn a few black sabbath songs in their entirety. Ironman, Paranoid and behind the wall of sleep are all I have at the moment.

I have played in a handfull of cover bands and one original band in the past so I have learned tons of covers over the years and forgotten most of them, but like Bogdan was saying they are much easier to learn the second time around. smile.gif And like Klasaine was saying I can't even remember what songs I have learned untill maybe someone starts to play or sing it , then the bells start to ring and they kind of come back to me. Sometimes I find myself digging up old set lists to remind myself of what I used to play. One thing that is funny tho, The songs that I remember best are some of the first songs I have ever learned, some of those have just been fused into my memory somehow. I wish it was like that for every song I have ever learned! rolleyes.gif Most of the songs I learn, if I don't play them alot they just get pushed out of my memory.
Learning and remembering new songs depends on the song I guess as to how easy or hard it is to play. Either way if I dont play them alot I usually forget them fairly easily.

i work at a bar in vegas where we have a cover band play every night one of the bands is called the limit, check um out they are really good! they play mostly by request, its pretty amazing sometimes they get stumped on a song they dont know and it seems like a member of a band will sing the song or the guitar player will play the melody and the rest of the band follows, but they ussually know every request.

i always wondered how the heck they remeber so many songs.
i always pay close attention to when those guys play hoping some of there skill rubs off
here is a vid of the band at the bar i work at

Wow you work at a bar in Vegas? I know a few musicians who used to work up here in Alaska that work in Vegas now, You wouldn't happen to know a Bass player named Kenn Tonn would you? I know he has done some gigs with a band called Snake Charmers in Vegas.

Holy Diver!

Plus, there are a lot of songs where I know how to play each part separately, but I'm not sure in the structure. These include Don't Talk to Strangers from Dio ,Welcome to Dying from BG, Stargazer and Gates of Babylon by Rainbow, Into the Storm and Somwhere Out in Space by Gamma Ray and few which I don't remeber right now.

But I never learn any solos in their completeness, I think that's harmful to the developement of my own playing style. Instead I always try to make up a solo that fits the song, but has my style aswell.

I don't do it too much any more but I played in a cover band that worked mostly casinos. 4 sets a night, 6 nights a week which meant generally 60 tunes (some w/in medleys) a night. If we got a request, as long as one singer and one chordal inst player knew 'most of it' - we'd do it, damn the torpedos. The request was usually stuck to or written on a $50 or $100 and NEVER less than a $20.
It was actually on those gigs where I learned to not worry about what I think I don't know. And also learned that there are about 40 different tunes - everything else is just accessories and ornamentation ... seriously.

*off topic but I played at a Celtic Festival in Eagle River about 4 years ago. Had a great time. Most of the band stayed for a few days after the fest so we could see some of Alaska. I would go back in a second. One of the most (if not the most) beautiful places I've ever seen. Breathtaking is not hyperbole.

symphony of destruction

rainbow in the dark

maybe a few others , more than anything I miss that huge wall of guitars from a well amplified stage

Hehee yeah it seems alot of folks from AK transplant down to Nevada, Big Lake is about 15 mins north of Wasilla.
You left in 99 eh? I was in a couple bands with Kenn durring the early to mid 90's, One was an original band called AK-Raw and the other was a cover band called Liquid Chicken.
I am not sure but I think Kenn may have just been filling in for Snake Charmers regular bass player. I just happened to run across a video of him playing down there with those guys on youtube today. smile.gif

Ha! How cool is that! Glad you had a good time up here! smile.gif Eagle River is between Anchorage and Big Lake where I live and I went to high school for my senior year just north of there in Chugiak where my father still lives , and my brother and his wife live in Eagle River, back in Eagle River valley. I actually built quite a few homes in Eagle River as well. smile.gif Never been to the Celtic fest though.

Hey mate, unfortunately due to copyright reasons, we can't publish entire songs as lessons, plus, the version of wasted years that I am learning is this one smile.gif

All the songs in that list will be performed in the acoustic version plus vocals - it's a great exercise for me getting better at playing vocals and guitar in the same time smile.gif
