I am a total phob about my action height. Normally ends up <=.030" on the treble and about .060" on the bass with 011 SIT strings.

I have been told by every luthier from the beginning of (my) time that I like my strings too low.

How about you folks? What is your set up?

I like mine as low as humanly possible smile.gif I don't one can get it "too low" but it's like anything else with guitar, it's more about personal taste and style of play than anything else.

I don't like mine too low, simply because there is no more space for the strings to vibrate as they should - conclusion, you sacrifice tone for the sake of speed, or speed for the sake of tone? biggrin.gif It's gotta be somewhere in the middle I think smile.gif

I'm the same as Cosmin. However I do like my acoustic guitar low.

I get the tone argument Cosmin. But for me it is a mental thing. I would be curious, if you in fact knew, what height yours was set at.

I like my action set as low as possible. I get a bit of fret buzz on my bass and I love it smile.gif

I think his has to do with the fact that I started playing on guitars that had too high action (bad quality guitars) and somehow I was unlucky to get several of those guitars which kinda hindered my motivation and performance when starting (I once tried my friends guitar and I was like - WOW I can actually play nicely on this one!).

So now I play with low action as a REVENGE thing probably smile.gif

I actually set my strings quite high, a little over 2mm. I find it gives me better control, I'm not of that belief that the lower you get it, the faster you play smile.gif

I'm not really of the belief that the lower that the strings are the faster but I find for me that it actually gives me more control.

On my Fender and F style guitars I'm a touch higher than factory specs:
Bass side 5/64th's
Treble side 5/64 or 6/64
I play .011 - .50 strings

Gibson style:
Bass side - between 5 and 7/64
Treble side - between 3 and 5/64
11 to 50s on the LPs too.

*I adjust my pickups slightly lower than spec too.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to write. I am new around here and it is nice to feel a part of things.

Sounds like my stuff is right in line with most of you all. My Luthiers must all be old school I am at 2/64 on the treble and 4/64 low.

Yngwie had some notoriously high action. Never seemed to hurt him any...LOL

Cos....I bet you are going to find your action is closer to the .7mm and 1.5mm I am suggesting than you think.

I didn't know the actual number. My tech told me I'm always a little higher than spec. So I looked up what 'spec' was and added approx 2/64s

yeah don't know the number either, but i like as low as possible without much buzz. I had to adjust my 8-string to get this result.
