Im not a massive black metal fan but I did like Darkthrone's ' A blaze in the northern sky' album. my favorite track from it, other than the intro to the album which is awesome, is 'In the shadow of the horns'

Does Satyricon count? If so, I choose them. They're riffing is so precise.

How about MELECESH? They are not strictly speaking, "Black Metal" but more "Blackened Metal" borrowing some elements from Black Metal. I like how they borrow all sorts of influences and mix them in. Our founder KRIS DAHL was actually instructed on guitar from one of the members of MELECESH if I remember correctly smile.gif Small world!! Not to mention, they were considered pretty darn Evil in their home town JERUSALEM. And ran afoul of the law just a bit for being so a tad beyond the dark side of Evil and eventually left the Holy Land. You gotta say, it takes pretty big stones to be a Black/Blackened Metal band in the Holy Land smile.gif

Nobody Mentioned Bathory??? Because they created FIRST Black Metal Album - Under the Sign of the Black Mark !!!!
" It was recorded in September 1986 and released on 11 May 1987, through New Renaissance Records and Under One Flag. It was a key album in the development of the black metal genre,[4][5] and greatly influenced the Norwegian black metal scene that emerged in the early 1990s.[6] "

I listen to some BM that has more of a mythological vibe or Northern culture concept.

Windir is by far my favorite band. Around 1:00 you can hear some of the Norse folk melody lines that they are known for. I encourage you all to check from 4:00 minutes on... truly epic. Soaring clean vocals and some amazing guitar harmonies.

If you like that... here is another good song. Sadly the creator of Windir died about 10 years ago due to hypothermia hiking through snow to his cabin.

Quarthon actually created "Viking metal" too later on... Hammerheart is a really good album.

Interesting band! I'm not sure about Kris studying with him, I know that he studied with Therion's guitarist.
