+1 on pegasus
Personally I like pickups that have some complexity going on in the mid range and almost no sub freq. no matter how hard I drive the (virtual) amp. |

Nice vid But one off-topic thing I'd like to ask: My ESP has stock EMGs in it but I really don't feel that I'm getting much sustain (and I really like sustain ). I was thinking of getting the stock ones out and put in seymour duncan pickups. But, just today, I lowered the pickup height a little (both of them about 1/4 turns on the screws) because they were always hitting my pick whenever I dug in a little too deep. Then I tested them and the sustain increased just by a bit. So now I don't know, should I get them out for duncan pickups, stick to a lower sustain or decrease the pickup height even more? EDIT: after some research on the internet, I've found that EMGs have low sustain because of the plastic cover.... Adding to Todd's comments (though I'm not an EMG user); Sustain's main enemy is pickups that have a very strong magnet, because it pull's the strings and the strings vibrates different than how it should (ofcourse think at least 2 pickups on a guitar which even affects the string vibration more...). Active EMG's have an advantage to this as the magnets aren't that strong due to the added preamp. So lowering pickups means less magnetic effect on strings. So mentioning preamp, GAIN is very important. More gain means more saturation which also compresses sound, so altough the strings moves the same time; the "fade" of the string is longer. Basicly we get the most of what the guitar already does. But this also effects tone. Active EMG's have a voltage mod. if you want more output from your guitar, here's a link I just found; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEJAznmEAn4 I'd also like to mention (personal experience) keeping the frets clean really help. Though not super-sterile, I clean all the frets each time I change the strings. This post has been edited by Mertay: Jun 19 2013, 01:42 AM |

Very well said!! Some great points in this post

The EMGHZ are "PASSIVE" pickups, meaning they don't have a battery powered preamp (which increases sustain) and they have larger mangets (which decreases sustain) so it's a ONE TWO PUNCH to reduce your sustain. If you want more sustain from a passive pickups setup, do what everyone else does, and grab an IBANEZ tube screamer or CLONE (like the NUX overdrive, or JOYO overdrive) and use it as a clean boost (volume way up, gain way down) pedal in y our signal chain after your guitar and before everything else. BINGO done. Thats VERY cool of him to swap them out Will he do the install for free? If so bake him cookies!!! If you don't want to try the clean boost pedal, and want to switch pickups, try maybe one of the high output Duncan pickups in this vid or any vid that you like or a guitar in the store he has that you like. Just off the cuff I'd say maybe the... DUNCAN DISTORTION DUNCAN INVADER DUNCAN NAZGUL DUNCAN PEGASUS All of which are pretty potent for passive pickups. The INVADER borders on insane but doesn't clean up as well as say the PEGASUS. Todd Thanks Todd and Mertay I bought the M-II with EMGs 81 and 85 but they didn't sound good to me, they were pretty much screaming all the time, I could get a really nasty pinch harmonic just by touching a string on medium distortion. Also, the highs on those are too boosted. Alexi Laiho used EMG HZs before he got his own signature EMG HZ pickups, so I swapped my M-II with another new M-II with EMG HZs in it and I love the sound of those pickups but the sustain is a wee bit less than what I like. I guess that the floyd rose seriously lessens the sustain, and the HZs are, of course, passive. So add both of them and you get less sustain. But the tone sounds pretty good to me, so I'm not going back to active pickups anytime soon. My local music store doesn't have any Tone Zone, DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan pickups, but they said they can get them for me from another store. The guy said if there wasn't much of a price difference (cause my EMGs are new), he'll just let me exchange my EMGs for anything I like. |
