This is a spiff vid from Ola doing some sound tests with some SEYMOUR DUNCAN (Brain Failed and I typed Dimarzio in the post title) pickups including the new NAZGUL (which I personally love and adore for it's dark growl and articulate low mid, but some folks just don't like it ) and the standard DISTORTION and some others. The PEGASUS sounds like it would make a great lead pickup. The active BLACKOUTS sounded almost muddy and smudged by comparison which shocked me. I expected them to KILL and they just didn't.

Which is your fav?

P.S. On the youtube page for this vid, you can download the DI (direct recorded) clean guitar files of each pickup to try out in your own DAW with your own plugins smile.gif

+1 on pegasus smile.gif

Personally I like pickups that have some complexity going on in the mid range and almost no sub freq. no matter how hard I drive the (virtual) amp.

Post what you used in your reamp if you would. I like the results smile.gif IT would be handy if you could share your project file/settings with the folks here @ GMC smile.gif

The pegasus does have some beef/chunk in the low range so based on your post it may not be the perfect choice for ya. I do like the way it sounds though smile.gif

Cool, I like watching these pickup comparisons. smile.gif I remembering watching this a few weeks ago and being impressed with the heaviness of the Nazgul.

But if I had to pick one I think I'd go with the Pegasus cause it also has a huge sound and a tighter clarity with the picking and palm muting. I think the Full Shred would probably cut the best in a band situation.

Nice vid biggrin.gif But one off-topic thing I'd like to ask:

My ESP has stock EMGs in it but I really don't feel that I'm getting much sustain (and I really like sustain sad.gif ). I was thinking of getting the stock ones out and put in seymour duncan pickups. But, just today, I lowered the pickup height a little (both of them about 1/4 turns on the screws) because they were always hitting my pick whenever I dug in a little too deep. Then I tested them and the sustain increased just by a bit.

So now I don't know, should I get them out for duncan pickups, stick to a lower sustain or decrease the pickup height even more?

EDIT: after some research on the internet, I've found that EMGs have low sustain because of the plastic cover....

Which "Stock" EMGs are in your guitar? Are they battery powered or are they the HI Z type with not battery required?

If they are the lower end passive set, then swapping out may help, but..

If they are the regular EMG 81/85 set, with a fresh battery, they should have nearly endless sustain. If you have that set, it's not the pickups. sad.gif It's whatever is coming after the pickups, and perhaps a something else like a noise gate clamping to early?

The seymour duncan pickups are really nice but most in this test are passive, (No battery) which means they don't have an internal preamp. Thus a pinch less sustain (other folks may say the exact opposite of course but thats what forums are for)

Let us know which pickups you have smile.gif

P.S. the plastic cover has zero impact on the sustain in the standard 81/85 set or any active set. Now if you are talking about the passive set, all bets are off IMHO. EMG started making passive pickups to serve the lower end of the market as they are cheaper since they dont need active electronics. Some folks love them of course, but passive EMGs seem almost a contradiction in terms.

Good ear smile.gif I have specced the NAZGUL in the guitar build I"m working on currently perhaps with a PEG in the neck slot. It's the first time I"ve specced pickups that I've never personally tried. I've listed to wads of demos and they sound pretty spiff so I I"m building a 7 string around the NAZGUL. It does really well with the LOW B string on a 7 and some pickups struggle with that.

Adding to Todd's comments (though I'm not an EMG user);

Sustain's main enemy is pickups that have a very strong magnet, because it pull's the strings and the strings vibrates different than how it should (ofcourse think at least 2 pickups on a guitar which even affects the string vibration more...). Active EMG's have an advantage to this as the magnets aren't that strong due to the added preamp. So lowering pickups means less magnetic effect on strings.

So mentioning preamp, GAIN is very important. More gain means more saturation which also compresses sound, so altough the strings moves the same time; the "fade" of the string is longer. Basicly we get the most of what the guitar already does. But this also effects tone.

Active EMG's have a voltage mod. if you want more output from your guitar, here's a link I just found;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEJAznmEAn4

I'd also like to mention (personal experience) keeping the frets clean really help. Though not super-sterile, I clean all the frets each time I change the strings.

Oh cool, would love to hear a demo of this with your new 7 string. smile.gif Would be very curious to hear how the Pegasus responds in the neck position with some leads.

Thanks Todd and Mertay smile.gif

I bought the M-II with EMGs 81 and 85 but they didn't sound good to me, they were pretty much screaming all the time, I could get a really nasty pinch harmonic just by touching a string on medium distortion. Also, the highs on those are too boosted.

Alexi Laiho used EMG HZs before he got his own signature EMG HZ pickups, so I swapped my M-II with another new M-II with EMG HZs in it and I love the sound of those pickups smile.gif but the sustain is a wee bit less than what I like. I guess that the floyd rose seriously lessens the sustain, and the HZs are, of course, passive. So add both of them and you get less sustain. But the tone sounds pretty good to me, so I'm not going back to active pickups anytime soon.

My local music store doesn't have any Tone Zone, DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan pickups, but they said they can get them for me from another store. The guy said if there wasn't much of a price difference (cause my EMGs are new), he'll just let me exchange my EMGs for anything I like.

Cool, if you like the tone then no problem. Choosing pickup isn't easy too so don't hurry if you're thinking about it, just try whatever you can find the written discriptions about their sound doesn't give enough idea sometimes.

For the floyd, if you find yourself not pulling it back (making the note higher like bending-sorry poor English smile.gif ) you can make it "dive-only".

My ibanez is currently blocked as I don't use tremolo much and it really helped sustain. Making it dive-only should also be helpful, make a search for a product called tremel-no

Yeah I know about tremol-no, but I've thought that IF I have any problems with the FR in the future, I'll get it blocked, for now it seems fine smile.gif anyway, for the time being, I'll try getting my hands on any other pickups and trying them out.

Yup. The EMGHZ are "PASSIVE" pickups, meaning they don't have a battery powered preamp (which increases sustain) and they have larger mangets (which decreases sustain) so it's a ONE TWO PUNCH to reduce your sustain.

If you want more sustain from a passive pickups setup, do what everyone else does, and grab an IBANEZ tube screamer or CLONE (like the NUX overdrive, or JOYO overdrive) and use it as a clean boost (volume way up, gain way down) pedal in y our signal chain after your guitar and before everything else. BINGO done.

Thats VERY cool of him to swap them out smile.gif Will he do the install for free? If so bake him cookies!!! smile.gif If you don't want to try the clean boost pedal, and want to switch pickups, try maybe one of the high output Duncan pickups in this vid or any vid that you like or a guitar in the store he has that you like. Just off the cuff I'd say maybe the...

DUNCAN DISTORTION
DUNCAN INVADER
DUNCAN NAZGUL
DUNCAN PEGASUS

All of which are pretty potent for passive pickups. The INVADER borders on insane but doesn't clean up as well as say the PEGASUS.

Yeah he'll install them for free, or I can do it myself, I've changed loads of pickups cool.gif But the sound of the EMG HZs is better to me than EMGs

I'll tell him to get some duncan pickups and if he gets some, I'll update you smile.gif

I have a boss ds 1 distortion pedal which I don't use, can I use that as a boost? Or my dad can probably come up with a boost circuit because he's just so good with electronics tongue.gif what do you say?

You can use it as a boost, just keep the dist/drive knob at 0 then work the volume knob up from 5+ tone about middle. smile.gif

Overdrive Pedals work really well as boost pedals since they don't break up quite as quick as a distortion pedal. I'm trying out several and the JOYO VINTAGE OVERDRIVE is hard to beat for the price. Sounds like a Tube Screamer but only costs about $35 U.S.
