I've been studying a little about guitars, what creates a good guitar, in terms of woods, pickups and hardware. But there is one thing that for me is the most important and it is how it feels in my hands and how it feels when I played it and hoy it sounds despite of all that I mentioned before. For me it has to look nice, it has to adjust to my hands, and sound sweet to my ears. What are the key points when you buy a new guitar do you prefer a specific kind of wood, pickups , bridge or any other feature or do you buy just in terms of how it looks and sound to you?

The wood used on the body, neck, fretboard.
The finishing of the body and the neck.
The thickness of the neck.
Shape of the body.
The width of the fretboard.
Scale length.
Number of frets.
Type/Brand/Tone of pickups.
String height or action.
Tremolo or fixed bridge.
Bolt-on neck or not.

I think that pretty much sums up everything anyone would look for in a guitar laugh.gif The two most important things, though: Shape and weight of the guitar, and the tone.

I love the super strat bodies and the strat bodies smile.gif I have a fixed bridge guitar, a floyd rose, and a strat tremolo guitar, so I guess I tried everything laugh.gif

If I buy a guitar, I make sure there is at least a humbucker at the bridge. I can always swap it out for a good one, but it has to have at least a humbucker at the bridge.

Action should be very low smile.gif

String gauge preferred by me (if that applies) is either 9s or 10s.

Pickups should have good mids and highs, I wouldn't really do much with pickups having good lows, because I'm a lead guitarist smile.gif

Also, I prefer non-finished thin necks. It makes them faster, and I really don't like those maple fretboards. Mind you, maple necks are awesome to me, just not the fretboard. I've always preferred rosewood.

For the body, I prefer an alder or basswood body (don't kill me please tongue.gif) with a polished shiny finish, I'm not a fan of matte finishes.

I first have to like the body style. Then I sit down and see how it feels. I have to like the sound as well.

The problem is how subjective all that stuff is. I had many advices from people who I believe are great and expirienced guitar players. Though even after 20 years of playing still sure 80% of those advices were missed according to my preferences and the way how I translate wordds like: tone, perfect tuning, comfort of playing etc...

So the only thing I've learned is that Your own quest through a tons of different gear is a best choice. Advices are good only if there are some obvious bad things in some particular copy of guitar model.

Years of working at music shop tought me than even speaking about particular model is useless because of how unique is every single one smile.gif

1. Looks
2. Color
3. Feeling
4. Price

After that I can typically work around it.
Crappy pickups and wood, I just EQ around it.
Proven with my Ibanez S, stock pickups suck.
Years later, still stock, still sucks. laugh.gif

If I like how it looks, I try it and check if I like how it feels and sounds. If it passes these 3 exams and I can pay it, my decision is done. It is simple for me. I don't care too much about type of woods and those things.

I always check the wood that's used.
Body (My favorites): Mahogany, with a maple top. Mahogany with a redwood top, all mahogany or korina.
Neck (My favorites): Mahogany with Ebony fretboard and Mahogany with Rosewood fretboard (in different variations).

Body shape is also important to me.
I don't want no pointy piece of crap that looks like it's straight out of a bad horrormovie from the 80's.
With that in mind, you should now know that the BC Rich guitars doesn't work for me biggrin.gif
I love the Les Paul and Tele shape, and variations of those.

If it has a tremolo, in any shape or form, I run away from the crime scene as fast as my legs can carry me.
I never look back, or I would have nightmares about it. It doesn't matter which tremolo system, I loathe them all.
Fixed bridge in various forms works for me smile.gif

Color: Very important. Who in their right mind would buy a guitar that sports a color they don't like?

Feel: You need to test out the different neck shapes and find the ones that work for you.
I did, and there's a few that are on the top of my list. Others I can't even wrap my small girlish hands around laugh.gif

Height/Action etc. can be fixed, so no worries there. If it's off, they'll fix it before I leave the store (or I caome back and collect it when done). If it's way off, and your fingers get scared of heights while playing maybe you should try another one...

Humbuckers! I like humbuckers, big, fat and covered humbuckers with an attitude.
I like some single coils and P90 as well, but they just don't look as good as a humbucker.
I'm no big fan of uncovered (open coil) humbuckers either, looks silly if you ask me.
On a serious note, heres a video from Bareknuckle Pickups explaining and showing the difference in tone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D756154qUdo

In my opinion, the covered humbucker sounds and looks better every time, every day of the year.

22 frets. No more.

Yeah, that about covers it for me smile.gif

I agree with Darius, because, each guitar feels different for every person out there smile.gif For me, it is important that a certain instrument will deliver the sounds that I want to get from it, first and foremost. Second, it must feel great in my hand - one reason for which I can't play on Gibson guitars - they just don't fit me - that does not mean they are not great, they are just not for me. The other important factor is the looks - I like a guitar which is classy and elegant and also has something wild about it, but just a hint. I dislike pointy shapes such as BC Rich or that sort of stuff..

Yes, for me it boils down to -

Do I like how it looks? Do I like how it feels? What benefits come with it, eg a tone character that I haven't already got?

The parts list / spec is, largely, not relevant; as with most products over a certain complexity, it's the package that counts

Yes, it's taken me decades to become comfortable with a Les Paul type guitar (compared to a Strat / super strat); now I can't work out what my problem was!

But I've still never found a Tele or SG that felt 'right'.

Weight of the guitar is very important for me. Some of my friends own Les Pauls and to be honest I would want that on my shoulder if I did a 2 hour show.

To be honest I'm very simple when it comes to buying guitars. I like them lightweight, and most importantly balanced so that the neck or body isn't falling one way or the other. From there I like consistent tone and a fast fretboard and enough variety in the pickups to allow me to play different styles on one guitar.

Nothing fancy, just a good working man's instrument is what I usually go for.

Main feature for me would have to be life. If my wife will kill me for getting it, that's a huge factor in my decision.

Other than that, the way the neck feels. You can always replace pickups. I LOVE the Ibanez wizard necks and would like to have another one one day - but right now if I get a new guitar it would be a Telecaster.

I remember when I first picked one up, back then I did have have Ibanez, and I was blown away with the feel of the PRS. To me, it was everything I liked about a Les Paul, without the weight.

And even though I'm so enamored with the Telecaster right now, every time I play my friends I have to get use to it, which if I owned one, would not be an issue at all, but that is just how distinct the differences are in the necks. You're right though,I can't see any other guitar being my "go-to" more than a PRS though.

I am so happy we feel the same way biggrin.gif I think I would have a very big problem giving them up... Although, honestly speaking I would love a Tele myself wink.gif
