Home Studio Update Options

After 2 months I'm slowly starting to have what I need at my workspace. It's not a recording studio...at least not for the micrphone recordings. I decided to get armed with tons of regular gear that people use at home...so my basic stuff is created by studio quality monitors and sennheiser headphones but all other speakers are cheap and...popular - so I could get an image of what people hear at home while listening to my mixes. It's not visible but there is a sub too.


After tons of tests I decided to cover the windows with w double layer of cloth - it also helps to absorb the light while I'm working at night (You know - moskitos etc). It's not visible but I use a roller photographic backgounds to fix some very first reflexes from the back wall. Traditional "mess in the room" method did part of the job. Rest is done by "removing the right corner" (opening the room door) and...the position I basicly sit in. Most of natural room problems around 60 Hz are not annoying in my listening position. I always double check the spectrum analyser tocheck if it's mix or the room issue. I put a foam under the Adams but didn't do it under other speakers...why? Because many regular listeners don't do it anyway...and I want a raw "different home" image.


In the middle You can see Behringer (Yeah! Behringer:) Mini MON distributor. It does the job for everything but the Adams and Sennheiser headphones (both are connected directly to the presonus audio interface)


I also use some cheap Philips headphones which are scooped as hell, and some sony earphones which have nothing but the middle and treble frequencies.


All this is done becase of the need to make things sound ok on all of these...it's much easier to make satisfying mix on a just one set of speakers...but comparison does give a wider image of Your mix.


Thanks to guys like Tony Miro and Martay for some confirmations and some different approaches which had sense to me!

Indeed - I think that it's great to be able to test your mixes on a diverse array of speakers. Speaking of which, I remembered something, regarding that ARC device - it said there that it will show you how your mix sounds in various environments. Is that true and is it really working?

New "Virtual Monitoring" feature mimics the sound of various listening devices like popular studio monitors, car systems, boom boxes, etc. allowing to the test of how mixes translate on different systems

Congrats!!! The variety of speakers is a great idea. Knowing what a mix will sound like in a variety of systems is crucial. The ADAM monitors are very nice Eventually, pairing the ADAMS with an ADAM matched sub will give you a really nice full range system. I'm using a generic sub and still plan to get a KRK to match my monitors.

Looks great Darius. Love the nice, compact setup you have. People seem to hate on Behringer, not sure why. I think they are great and the prices are amazing.

When you get the Adam sub Darius experiment with blocking the port on the monitors. You'll lose some low end, which the sub will make up for anyway but the timing and placement etc of the bass shouldl be tighter.

Behringer are ok but not great if you find a well made unit. A lot of people however have found the manufacuring quality to be very hit and miss.

Thanx for the advice! I think I would try to do it because I would not like to have any boosted lows near to the crossover cutting freq.

I bought Behringer MiniMon just because I plaugged it in, listened very carefully (didn't make any descent meterings) and it seemed to be enough transparent to work with additional home quality speakers where You know...amps and preamps from regular home hi-fi add more noise and distortion than this little distributor so...I see no point to buy something high end for this purpose. Adam's are connected directly to the Presonus anyway

Ive got the same behringer monitor controller I'm using it to relay signal from my interface to my imac audio inputs for vid chat. It seems to be a fine unit and was priced well. I also have a behringer rack mount Direct box unit that is the key to my guitar sound when using plugins. And I've got a behringer headphone amp for using 4 headphones at once to record multiple players. Some of their stuff is really solid IMHO. You just have to pick and choose

Awesome ideas. Nice home studio setup man. I remember hearing Bryan Adams saying they would make mixes in the studio, send them to cassette tape and then listen to them in the car's tape deck to see what the average joe would hear.
