Some of you who buy from iTunes may have noticed there is sometimes a blue bubble occasionally saying the album has been "Mastered for iTunes."

I don't really get it, but it's probably really simple. Can someone enlighten me? Wouldn't it sound the same whether it was on iTunes or Amazon or elsewhere?

Brandon

Very good question! smile.gif

I have seem online mastering houses offering this service. I would be curious to know more details and how it affects the recording/mastering process. What are benefits, differences etc?

I think it has something to do with lots of people using headphones which came with iPhone.

Edit: Google, my friend smile.gif

It basically means that you master for digital distribution using the Apple AAC lossless format. So instead of dithering to 16 bit 44.1 you can use the undithered 24 bit fixed file at any sampling rate from 44.1 up. Staying at 24 bit fixed means that you have more dynamic range. Note that a SR above 88.2 will not provde any sonic advantage. Transcoding can result in ISOs so there may well be distortion if your file is near to 0dBFS. You should also be aware that mastering to a pmcd for redbook for physical replication/duplication will mean that the CD can include the correct fades, x-fades, PQs, ISRcs and so on. Digital doesn't necessarily get these right. If you're not sure you should speak to your mastering engineer.
