Hey there guys smile.gif

A little bit about me, I can play solos like Don't Cry, Estranged, Nothing Else Matters, the first Master of puppets solo, first Welcome Home Sanitarium solo, Yesterdays etc and all those are about a 3 to 4 in difficulty on this website but I noticed there aren't too many '5's in the lessons section. I have trouble with solos like Mr Crowley, Enter Sandman, Tornado of souls(was relieved to find out it was an 8 on here hehe) etc. I think I need solos that bridge the gap. Any suggestions?

Hey mate smile.gif Here are some suggestions and in order to help out even better, can you share a video recording with us, having one of the above solos performed? It's always great to see and hear wink.gif

No problem smile.gif Would it be best to have the actual track playing in the background or will that mask any discrepancies in my playing?

I think that you will benefit the most from playing along with real music. Use your practise time (when it's just your guitar) to nail all the necessary patterns and phrases but put them all together with the backing track. That's the true tester. Only with the music will you be able to start improving your timing and get into the groove properly.

Of course, you don't have to play over the backing straight away.. give yourself time to get it up to speed. But definitely incorporate the backing track into your practise after a while and definitely aim to play it over the backing as your ultimate goal smile.gif

We have many lessons with exercises that are great to train your technique. Practising exercises can help you to be able to have no technique limits. My suggestion is to check which parts are giving your problems in those solos and create variations from this licks and practice them as exercises.

You can also check this search: Pentatonic Solos Level 5/6

In this link you can also find my favourite technique exercises:

Ben is definitely right - the backing track practice should appear once you are confident in knowing the parts in the song that you are learning. Now, if you could record against a backing track it would be perfect, because in that way, we can also observe your abilities of blending your playing into a musical context smile.gif

No worries, I'm thinking the Smoke on the water solo would be about a 5. I'm going to try that one tomorrow, seems within my grasp.
