Hey Guys and Gals.

It's been a while since I have shown my face regularly around here. Been busy and life has been crazy. It's now going back to normal, and I'm coming to for help. Any computer skilled people here? I am moderately informed of how the computer works and I just can't figure this out.

So here's the problem:
I am unable to extract folders in Windows 7 properly. I go to "Extract All" and it just gives me an empty folder. I have googled and searched so much and I can't figure this out. In the meantime, I am going to be using a program called 7-Zip. I would just like to use the default Windows 7 way as well, as it's more convenient. I'm not sure what I did to make this happen. I'm going to be running my Virus and Malware scanners as well to see if that's the problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Brandon Burch

what's the ending of the file that you want to open? What's the size of the file that you want to open?

Windows 7, by default, allows to open zip files [they are shown with a folder that has a zipper across the height of the folder] just by double clicking it.

It all depends on the file that you want to open.

It is 7 MB. But another one I wanted was several hundred MB. It doesn't matter on my file size. Same thing happens. I can open the file but can't extract it. It's a ZIP file.

No idea if this will help you...

select windows explorer to open the files

if all else fails, use winrar or 7zip.. I think 7 zip is free and winrar is freeware.

I usually right click on the zipped file that I want to unzip and then mouse over 7-zip which usually gives me a load of options in another box...I always press the 'extract here' option.
I hope that helps. ph34r.gif

The file is password protected (although you can unpack it), happened to me a few times. Hit F5 and see what will pop up..
Use Total Commander, he has the best tools for file handling, etc..

Hey man, I've used 7-zip for a long time, and trust me, once you get the hang of it, it's a lot more convenient than the default. You get a little context menu when you right click in Windows Explorer, and then it extracts instantly. No opening programs, selecting files etc. is necessary. smile.gif

Yeah, I think I will just stick with 7zip. I just changed it to open .zip files with 7zip by default and I think that will just work fine. I have used 7zip enough that I can just deal with it. i guess it's my OCD with not being able to use the default way. wink.gif Thanks for the help given guys.
