Is that an Ibanez Jem I see? The second from the left? One of the older ones, a 77 or something like that?

P.S. A very cool story, Pantalaimon, hope you achieve your dreams someday! Which I believe you will, if you try hard, believe in yourself, and practice!

What got me thinking about playing guitar and how awesome it would be?

Seeing my uncle playing Crazy Train with ease, and being admired by the rest of my family for being able to play the guitar when nobody else could.

How did I get my first guitar?

My uncle and dad tried to get me into it at about age 13. Sadly, I wasn't interested in learning anything at the time because I was too consumed by gaming and what was left of my social life.

What got me to play it?

A year or two ago (I forget) there was a huge blackout in NY. For about a week I had no electricity to do anything I considered fun. Then I noticed, sitting in a corner of my room was my neglected Fender Squire. I picked it up, picked up a book from Guitar Center (which still had a bit of power), and brought it home.

A few days later the power returned, and I shunned the book aside after learning how to read Tablature (I didn't know which way the notes were). I went online, and found how truly easy the intro to Crazy Train was, and I felt as if I'd really accomplished something on my own for once.

Where am I now?

i was 14 years old when i really got into guitar. iwas watching my uncle play his les paul and i thought that i could do everything he could do with alot of time, practice, and effort. So i drug out my guitar that i had for about 2 years but never played it. After a couple of months i decided i needed a new guitar so i bought a brand new ibanez. Then later i bought a zoom G9.2tt guitar effects console to help me go along. i still have a dream of being a professional musician when i get older. I might even start teaching on here for some extra cash. My uncle is about to start teaching on here so i wish him alot of luck he has had 14 years of playing experience so i hope he can teach on here. Anyway check out my cool picture.

ohmy.gif You greatly impreed me !!

I start playing guitar seduced by the influence of the Beast: Iron Maiden cool.gif

Last September I sold one of my night vision scopes on Ebay. They guy was an idiot, paid me nearly $2,000. It was worth only $1,400 max. Well, it took two idiots to bid it up that high, the bigger idiot won the auction. I felt that I could not take that much of an advantage of an idiot, so I split the idiocy with him sent him back $300.

But I figured, spend it frivolously, I had reached the stage in my life where it was either:

1) A motorcycle.
2) A younger woman.
3) A electric guitar

I opted for the latter, as I figured that was the least expensive. 7 guitars later, little did I know.

Now having all these guitars, I felt I needed to get good within 1 year, or I would look totally silly. I thought of a definition of "good". Anyone who can play Canon Rock decently at standard speed and Crossroads as well as Clapton did on an average night with Cream would be considered good by most people. So I set those goals.

My anniversary date is Sept. 11, I have 11 more days to accomplish the mission.

I wouldnt have sent dude back anything blink.gif It may have cost you x amount but where he lived it might have been more or hard to find.Thats what i love about ebay you get 2 people in a bidding war and things can go crazy. Its a great place to make a proffit.Guess it showed you were a good guy though sending him some money back, not many would do that, smile.gif

What made me want to learn? At the height of my U2 fanatacism I was in awe of the Edge's total musicality! I loved his simple yet catchy riffs that always suited the mood of the songs. At the time i thought there was knowone cooler than Edge with his cream Gibson Les Paul and no 7 t-shirt! biggrin.gif

I wanted to learn U2 songs, as soon as i got my guitar I realised that wasnt a good way to learn so i scrapped that idea and started listening to other great guitarists too ! laugh.gif

Me and 2 of my friends went to Hungary last year, together with a group of people with the same age. And after a couple of days, when we made some new friends, we discovered that one of them played the guitar. After a bit of talking about the guitar, he said he'd be able to teach us the basics.
And when we got home, we went to a guitar shop with the 4 of us (the one who'd teach us the basics, and the 3 of us who wanted to learn to play the guitar) and we bought a Washburn X-10 Starterpack.

QUOTE (Pantalaimon @ Jul 22 2007, 05:09 AM) *
This I know: One day I will be a great musician.

I have a similar story smile.gif

My dad has been playing guitar for 40 some years now, since he was 15 (that means he's 55 now wink.gif ). Needless to say, practicing correctly or not 40 years of dedication will turn you into a good guitarist, he's really impressive. He doesn't know any scales or pretty much any theory, but he always knows what key he is in, what notes to play, and what chords sound good with it.

He bought my my first guitar when I was 9, a baby taylor acoustic at Dave's Guitar Shop in lacrosse Wisconsin. From there I learned the major chords, noodled around learning some stuff like the intro to "paint it black" and "come as you are" and other such basic things, but I never learned the whole song as beginners often do. I forget which year it was that he bought me my first electric, a fender musicmaster, though it had electrical problems and didn't work through an amp without a lot of crackling. So I had been playing some on my acoustic, but probably not every day and certainly not for hours, so I hadn't progressed much beyond those basics mentioned earlier. On the electric, things were easier to play, so I began to play a little more, but still not seriously.

I put the guitar down for a few years. I would still tell people that I could play guitar if they asked (even though to this day I feel I'm not yet worthy of calling myself a true "guitar player") and I would pick it up now and then, but not ever sitting down and practicing with it.

My dad still impressed me, but he is a terrible teacher. There really is no way for him to teach what he knows, he can only play. His ability comes from trial and error and simple experience, which is respectable to me but I think there is a lot more to be learned, much quicker, through just studying it (most of you will agree). So he never really taught me anything.

It wasn't until about freshman year in high school that I began to have other friends who were proficient with instruments. Especially a buddy of mine who plays the drums, and another friend who plays the guitar (among others). We'd jam sometimes and I'd always suck, so I began to feel the need to improve myself. All of this came to a boil when I bought my first REAL guitar (even though for years I'd had my dad's les paul, strat, telecaster and acoustics around me), a fender aerodyne telecaster and a fender automatic gt amp (kind of rare I think). Honestly I wish I'd just gone with a regular tele, but I chose this one partly because I think it looks cool smile.gif It's a decent guitar though, that's the point. I really began practicing it.

The first thing I decided that I needed to do was to learn a song all the way through. Otherwise I couldn't really consider myself a guitar player. So I learned Phish's "Stash", Zeppelin's "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Ten Years Gone", Vai's Tender Surrender, some chili peppers songs etc. I didn't have the ability to really do that (especially tender surrender biggrin.gif), but the most important part was that I was actively practicing and challenging myself on these songs.

Ever since then, every time my ability comes into question I find myself lacking and I only practice harder. I can feel that one day soon, I think within 2-3 months, I'll be happy calling myself a guitarist and maybe able to surpass my dad. Since I bought the telecaster, I decided I needed an upgrade, so I looked around for a bit and Kris and David inspired me to buy a parker Nitefly, so I got that as well as a fender hot rod deluxe amp. All of my gear is made in the USA because after I bought the japanese tele, which still is a good sounding guitar, I decided I really want top quality stuff (not to say that there aren't other companies outside of the US that have great quality - but until I can afford an elmwood modena or other things, I'll stick to US made stuff for simplicity tongue.gif).

Thanks to slammer I finally recorded something. I think recording really helps you, that's the latest thing pushing me to get better. I know I can play better and harder things than what I can improvise, so that's really kind of good to think about, I know I have some degree of technical skill, but I need to learn to utilize it now smile.gif

So I joined GMC about 3 months ago, and I feel a whole lot of improvement in my playing. I think I'm well on my way to being the guitarist I want to be, and I know I will be.

When I was young I was so shy and my family doesn't like to listen to music much.Because they are working. I love to hear one rock song in their CD I don't remember that it was. Nevertheless, I love rocks from that time. Most probably is drum not guitar. So my first inspiration for music is drums..(Sound stupid to do with guitar?)

I wish I could play drums but I was in a hard time of study! I took a lot of extra classes for academic reasons of my poor performance. So it continued till class 9... I felt bad about it and I didn't listen to music much. I was hard to hear any music. Still I got some CD from my neighborhood. Also I got addicted to gaming.

After class 9 I went to India for study. I lived there for 2 years with out internet ,computer, mp3 , and personal cell phone.(What a hard life in campus school!) After one year, one of my friends push me in music class(Because he is a drummer) I thought I could try out drums.

Somehow, drums was full I can't really do that. I told my friend, " OK, I will jam with you with my guitar!". Then I started to play with one poor acoustic guitar. sad.gif

Before that my first time to touch guitar was actually in Final exam of class 9.... What do you think? Midnight trying to play guitar? Exam ? no worry? Poor English? Poor marks? While everyone was on their studies. tongue.gif huh.gif

Then my marks came out, it was not remarkable for myself as a first year study aboard but others Indian students got blamed...My marks was 59% happy.gif dry.gif biggrin.gif (HAHA I still laugh about it till today although they got blamed in their local language and i don't even understand a bit but teacher kept pointing towards me while I was doing my math homeworks blink.gif blink.gif )
Those Indian wanted me to stop playing guitar...may be I disturbed them a lot in that day! tongue.gif tongue.gif Somehow they couldn't happy.gif

I didn't learn much about it still I practice useless chords for over a year. That make me get thought the Rhythm part. sad.gif sad.gif

I get inspired by Three door down,Creed, sum41 and Cannon rock-JerryC.

I asked my pop to buy a electric one for me after I came back from India. I got Ibanez. laugh.gif laugh.gif I was inspired by one of my friends in India. Although, he plays well. He didn't though me. I really don't know why? sad.gif

Now I came to Canada and I get motivated by someone here to get serious about guitar. Somehow I know this site for over a year but I couldn't manage to get it and I left this site to find free stuff.

Now I'm here not even a week I learn 2-3 licks already! It's cool here! Theory also well managed.I hope I will see more stuffs here! I loved this place man! rolleyes.gif wub.gif wub.gif wub.gif smile.gif smile.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif ph34r.gif happy.gif happy.gif happy.gif happy.gif tongue.gif

I started fancying guitars whn I was 12, and I was in the scouts. Who was able to play guitar had a special star on the shirt, and during the bonfire had a special important place. That's why I began strumming a classic guitar. The year after, I left scouts, but the envy of playing has never left me. laugh.gif
