> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Outlandish Style by Bogdan Radovic

If anyone should play this for the REC it must be me. I picked up the bass this week and I recorded this over and over today, and I think it is time for your judgement. Notice that audio and video were not recorded at the same time, as this is almost impossible for me, when I want more than crappy sound quality

Since Bogdan is the bass guru here I'll leave the most important details for his judgement:) It sound like a really good job. You kept the tuning perfect and the precision itself also makes this take very pleasant to the listener. Althought I found some timming issues especially at the beginning. God job man! smile.gif

This was a pleasant surprise! smile.gif
I think this is a very strong take overall.

Some details :

* Tone is too bass heavy and boomy. Try adding middle frequencies and lowering bass a bit to get a more defined sound of the guitar. Usually it is good to start with flat settings on both the bass guitar and amp and go from there. Often, very little adjustment is needed. In most situations I have just slightly raised bass and treble knobs and on the Fender jazz I have them almost flat and raise the mids quite a bit to get that bite to the sound and cut through.

* Take needs a bit more dynamics. I have a feeling you are picking a bit softly. Try to dig in where more energy is needed, for example when line goes towards the chorus (around 0:20). Utilizing a bit stronger picking (power wise) will also get the dead notes out very well.

* In the pre-chorus slap lick you don't play it as in the video (using same technique), rather switch to picking few of the last notes in fingerpicking style.

* At 0:37 you play slightly ahead of the beat - watch out for timing in this lesson

Good things : This piece a bit tricky to play because it requires a laid back feel (one where you need to constantly keep it cool and play behind the beat). You did an excellent job here and really captured the vibe well and kept the groove going. To make it perfect, try to utilize a bit more dynamics (emphasizing certain notes, combining fingerpicking strenght to elevate certain licks in volume etc). Also, try to get a bit more "recording friendly" bass tone which cuts through the mix well by utilizing more mid frequencies and lowering bass if it feels too boomy. Overall - very good take and I hope to see more bass RECs from you! smile.gif

Hey Ulrik! It's really cool to see you playing the bass! I think that this take sounds very good, you look comfortable playing this style on bass. Bogdan already marked the important details that you need to have in mind to improve this one. Keep on the good job! smile.gif
