Sadly, you can't trust those speakers for mixing.
Those are "desktop computer speakers" that fall in the same category as "ear buds". To be used to check a mix to see how it will travel. You really need a pair of actual "Monitors" and good pair of headphones
You can get a pair of KRK ROKIT 6 inch for about $300
Or a pair of Alesis control one for about the same price.
I've got a pair of each and they are a good, cheap way to get started with actual "monitors".
They also have built in amps so you don't need an amp to power them.
As far as headphones, might look at the AKG 240. IMHO, they are about as "flat" (uncolored) as you are going to find for the price. They are not "bassy" like the Beats stuff, but instead have a somewhat neutral response which is better for mixing
They can be had for about $100. I've got a pair of AKG 240 MK II which is in the same line. This entire series is quite good and hard to be for the price.

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely consider some good studio headphones for my next equipment purchase! I already have some relatively good monitor speakers, TASCAM VL-S21 model. My laptop is equipped with BEATS audio, so the speakers on here are somewhat good, but I'm getting the impression that the software that controls the audio output might have skewed my ability to make good editing decisions. I'll try disabling it before I do any audio editing next time.
