> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Dorian Phrases by Jose Lassaga

Here is my breakdown of the video Lick 1 is based around g and b hitting the notes of Emin Lick 2 is e blues with the M6 from dorian in the descending run down to g. Lick 3 arpeggios are shaped 1,b3, 5,b7,9 then repeating up every 5th. Lick 4 is a very nice lick accents the c# and a then again. This seemed very dorian Lick 5 outline emin again Lick 6 blues stevie ray kinda lead Lick 7 alternate picking chromatic blues scale ending on e Overall I think my timing got a little astray during the arpeggios I will definately work on them. They have shown me a new way of moving across the neck. The lick after that got blemished by the timing but I pull it together at the end of the Lick 4. I wish I would have held a few notes longer and some more abrupt. Also my timing on Lick 7 is wacky, I am working on my picking hand and it's in the middle of a change. Overall this was a very nice lesson.

Hi Jim, good to see you in the REC Zone.

Your bends and vibrato are pretty cool.. and generally speaking so is your timing.

There were some missed notes with your picking in a couple of licks (or it sounded like there were ?) and as you said, the timing went a bit wacky, not in just one but at least two licks. So, timing and co ordinating the two hands would be my main focuses of work, if it were me smile.gif

Hey mate smile.gif

This is definitely not an easy lesson and I think it's great that you tackled it. The phrasing is very interesting and dynamic and it will help you enrich your playing vocabulary a lot!

Now, as an overall impression - you should focus on the timing and clean playing in the phrases (see around 0:32 for instance) and also, the bending in some spots where you have been a little outside of the pitch. It's a matter of polishing things smile.gif

Keep practicing hard!

Hi Jim! This lesson is on the right track but as the other instructors say, many of those licks still need to be worked. There is no secret here, just take each lick an repeat it over and over. Keep on the hard work!

Hey there dear friend. Aside from above advices...I would try to keep any FX level as low as possible. They can make sound of guitar less clear...especially when it's about educational purpose. Reverb is less evil but any kind of MOD family effects affect the way we can judge bends pitch, vibrato and everything that has something to do with the pitch.

Your take gives nice flavor of listening - You feel the groove...but there is some work needed with precision. You're on the good path. I think a few things di change in a good way since Your very first take here. I know You like chorus and similar effects but it would be good for Your own development to leave those for a while smile.gif Think of this for a while smile.gif All best Jim smile.gif
