Its also related to advertisements so its also about the money. A big scandal happened a few months ago about this in my country (music business is like stone age here compared to Europe or USA);

The official foundation which handles the legal stuff (copyright) has a youtube channel here, its used for public and legal reasons sort of like a tool that one can "officially" publish (but no limited of course) his work through it on web. The money gained from here are splitted with the artists who used it besides the tax...youtube announced such piracy was made from this foundations youtube channel, so it can be said the foundation which fights piracy made the worst piracy ever smile.gif

In the old days, they used to buy their own albums, nowadays they buy views. They decide what people have to listen, and the sad side is that people listens what the labels decide. Same old story.

In the old days they didn't buy their own records - way too expensive (remember, a view is free and very cheap in bulk).
Before 'soundscan' they (the record cos) would falsely increase their shipped totals. Actually they would ship a ton of product out and not log the returns - the unsold product (though sometimes they'd try to charge the band for the returns, lol!). Or, turn it into the 'cut outs' that you see. Many times they forced record stores to buy or pre-pay for a certain number of copies of new releases (gibson and fender still do this with music stores - if you wanna be a dealer you have to carry/buy a certain amount of product). Again, before soundscan record sales were calculated on the 'shipped' or ordered totals. Standard record business practice. Zep's 'Physical Graffiti' was the first platinum pre-release or pre-ordered album. That was based on the record shops thinking (or assuming) that the public would buy - literally - 1,000,000 Phys Graf records and then they pre-ordered them. The new model is no different than the old model when it comes to this kind of stuff.
