> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Around the World - China by Sinisa Cekic

Cool piece. It makes me want Chinese food. The GMC has so many hidden gems. I think I'm gonna invest in a effects processor.

Did you say Chinese food ? I'll go for some sweet n' sour spare ribs and beef chow mein !! tongue.gif

It's interesting to see you on the electric - I didn't know if you only played acoustic or not.

You move a bit too quickly in many of the phrases.. you're rushing in front of the beat a bit. You can afford to relax and hold back a bit more. Make sure your fingers are staying on each note for the requisite duration.

It's going to be difficult to get those fast hammer-on phrases right at the end with a clean tone unless you copy Sinisa's picking pattern. If you watch video 6 you can see that he performs a mini sweep, catching 2 strings consecutively with an upstroke. The key is to match the upstrokes with your left hand and make sure that you're finger is in the right place as the pick hits. This technique is basically sweep picking.. but when it's reduced to a small 2 string pattern it's usually referred to as economy picking. It's a way of picking across 2 strings with less movement. You don't have to be a total master of this technique to take advantage of it. It's almost like strumming - but reduced in size. The pick moves in the same direction but instead of the left hand being fixed in a chord position you're fingering different notes on each string.

Hi mate, I also need Chinese food now!! hahah

You are getting close with these one and I think that there are 3 main things that you should pay attention to improve this take:

1. Timing: Most of the time you are not playing the phrases tight. It seems that you become anxious and play the notes a bit before the beat and that makes the overall lesson sound untight.

2. Vibrato: This technique is a very important part of the lesson because that how Sinisa gets the "Chinese" sound. Check the main video and see how he manages this technique. It's a bit more aggressive/ faster than the vibrato that you are doing.

3. Tone: Your tone could be warmer to make it fit better with the backing, something closer to Sinisa's tone.

That's all! Keep on the hard work!

Aside from what guys pointed I would like to talk about Your pick grip. I think You could try to hold it on the side of index finger...not the print side. Of course there are some players that hold the pick the way You do but...if You look closely most of efficient guitarists hold id on the side of an index finger. This helps to have solid grip.

BTW. The way You do this is very natural and probably most of us began exactly the same way smile.gif
