Hello everyone, I'm recording my solo EP, this year. One thing that is holding me back is choosing my tone.

Anyway, I wanted to know who's willing to help me. I'd record a small audio file, comparing some Kemper Rigs and you just have to type your opinion.

I just need help with the lead sound. I have some options already and will put a track on soundcloud more later.

Also, does anyone know how does he get this distortion? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7HbqvdEJJ8 I've talked to Robbie already and know his rig but the thing I can not achieve is that tone with overdrive yet very smooth at all. It's like you know the overdrive is there but the "amp" never quite "breaks".
It would be a good fit for some future non-heavier songs.

The tone from the vid is a pretty typical medium distorted Strat tone.
Normal output single coil pkups and it sounds like he's in one of the in between positions or possibly just the middle pkup.

You said you know what his rig is. What is it all exactly?

If I were to venture a guess, if the rig is the same and you can't get the tone to "break", your pickups or signal going in might not be hot enough.

its a Marshall JMP1 rack pre-amp and a TC Electronic G force processor running in stereo. Thats pretty much it. The guitar is in the video...

But I don't want the tone to "break" I want a smooth clean distortion like his'.

ah, I misunderstood ~ I thought you were looking for just over the top. Same applies though. Your pickups or your input (or both) might not match his.Tone comes from your fingers too ~ don't discount that as a possibility. Perhaps the guy in the video is the person you should be comparing notes with?

1) It's his hands and his guitar ... not you and not your axe.
2) What type of pickups?
3) What mic and what speaker?
4) If it's going 'direct' is there a nice studio pre-amp he's going into after the JMP1?

So many variables.

As I mentioned before that's a fairly common medium gain Strat tone.
To get in the ballpark you should have a Strat with low or 'vintage' output single coils and a tube screamer style of OD. That should get you very close.

Something like these ... http://us.focusrite.com/mic-pres for mic in, line level in, instrument in.
Out of the guitar amp JMP1 (or after the microphone if it's a mic'd cab) > into the pre-amp > into your DAW.
Nothings 'required' but there are many ways to fine tune your sound.

And of course there are also software versions like this stuff ... http://www.uaudio.com/uad-plug-ins.html

I'm not saying that this is how it was done in the OPs video example but that you shouldn't rule it out.
*I personally think the particular tone that's being chased has mostly to do with the guitar and and the player.

Typically I achieve this sound by switching to the second to last position on my switch (bring the switch all the way up to the neck pickup and then back it off one click) and combine that with a light distortion. You can use your volume control to adjust the amount of bite at this point and simply playing harder or softer will get you to the break point or give you a beautiful clean sound. You can get a similar but brighter sound by using your switch in the second position (one click above the bridge pickup) but it can get really harsh really fast so I would err on the side of caution there.

Slightly off topic but related to the original post.

I've been noticing lately that a lot of players - both online in forums as well as in real life - are asking how to get the medium gain Strat tone.
I guess because of my age this is an easy one ... standard strat, normal single coil pkups, tube screamer type of OD and a Fender style tube amp (maybe some delay and reverb). Oh, and don't turn up the gain on the Screamer too much and just hit the front end of the amp a little more than your guitar's normal output with the 'level' control. That's it! Seriously. I mean obviously play good but this is one of the most normal and common tones an electric guitar and amp can do. Don't over think or overgear this one.

I use basically the same approach as you on this one, but I use the clean channel of the AMT and the Suhr Shiba Drive smile.gif It's not THAT good but with a little help from the hands I think it's pretty close tongue.gif

You can get very close to that tone with any guitar, amp and OD pedal. Backing - off - the - gain is the secret - on both the amp and the pedal.

*If one really wants the Strat tone - vintage (normal) output single coils are the only way.

To be honest I have not much to add besides Ken's words. That kind of tone is not a matter of preset. A remember having devices like 11R and similar. In many cases even if You have a "plexi" preset is far from how the real plexi acts. Most of those can perfectly copy frequency responses of particular amp, cab and mic set up. Unfortunately it's hard to copy every single reaction for Your playing that real amp does. I'm not downgrading the power of Axe FX. Just mentioning some of my own adventures with tone, real amps and amp simulations. Those last came insanely good those days but still...there is a difference.

If You look for that tasty strat bite try to make some research around some marshall amp sims ...like the mentioned plexi tone. Also remember that in case of strat not only the pickup type but also it's placement has a lot to do with that classic tone. You might try to get something simialr with Your Axe but try to borrow some guitar that is made of ash or alder and let it have natural single coil (no humbucker with coil split) and 21 to 22 frets max (this is waaay important)

If it's not possible You will have to cheat Your "AMP" that it get's much brighter instrument to it's input. You can do this with pre-eq or treble boost pedal (or it's sim in axe)

In this song I tried to get sort of Strat flavor (the soft part of course) on the guitar that has 24 frets and mahogany body ...and humbuckers (totaly oposite for strat). But getting particular drive set-up and splitting the coil gave me satisfying effect even if it still doesn't sound like a strat. I made it with LeXTAC (Bogner Ecstasy simulation|") and ts808 with treble boost (gain on 0).

Bogner was famous from modifying the Marshalls. If You ever played one You could feel how those two are related in case of dynamics and overall feel of response while playing.

I was somewhat forced to learn this smile.gif When we are playing with the orchestra, onstage, a heavily distorted tone would mess things up really bad and I am always aiming for having a flute like tone, if it makes any sense and that's how I ended up using an mildly overdriven clean tone which responds extremely well to every dynamic impulse given by the hand. In the context of being a part of an orchestra, it's just great smile.gif
