Anyone else got a Line 6 - Dream Rig yet?
http://line6.com/dreamrig/

My final component the JTV-89F is on the way, can't wait to see how she will sound!

I will finally have the complete set after years of Christmas/Birthdays:

DT50 Amp <L6LINK> Pod HD500 Effects <VDI> JTV-89F (James Tyler Variax guitar with Floyd Rose - Double Locking)

29 Guitars - Billions of Effects - Auto-Tuning Change - etc!!! Should be a lotta fun, and however not too complex to setup.

I'll be looking for some good new (Acoustic, Blues, Rock, Metal, and Shred) presets next, if anyone already has them that would be great?

Congrats Assaboi. I've been jonesing for the DT-50 or DT-25 even to complete my HD500, Variax setup as well.
You'll love the JT Variax. I might have waited for the JTV-89F if I had known it was coming out as I would like to have a Floyd Rose style trem as well. Instead, I have the Les Paul style JTV-59.

My favorites are the Telecaster and Martin acoustic models. Probably cause I don't have an actual Tele. As for the acoustic, the JTV is the only way to get anything close through your speakers without a nice room and a couple of good, well placed mics. It's just so convenient to have everything right there.

As for alternate tunings, you've got to make sure your speakers or your headphones are set pretty loud so that you can't also hear the unamplified strings. That will mess with you at first. But hey, with the DT-50, you won't have anything to worry about. Just set the master volume at noon and you're good to go. biggrin.gif One thing I did notice with the alternate tuning knob is that when I set it to drop-D, if I hit a harmonic at the 12th fret e string, the initial attack is way out of tune almost like the intonation is wrong, but I checked that out and it's ok. It kind of bugs me cause I have one tune "Midsummer Daydream" by Rik Emmet of Triumph (old tune, yeah) that uses this. I can't really play/practice this song with that setup. I'd like to know if I'm the only one experiencing this so let me know if your Variax does not do this. Other than that, this guitar is killer. It plays great and even it's magnetic pickups are good. Sounds very close to the real Gibson LP. So even without the modeling stuff it's a great guitar.

I've uploaded an acoustic patch for the HD500 (zip file) that can get you started with acoustic tones. It's essentially uses a compressor, and I've mapped two different chorus pedals and two different reverbs to different footswitches so you can get some nice varied acoustic tones all with the same patch. I think with the acoustic models that's all you need is a bit of compression and reverb to taste. Also, if you have the digital variax cable connected (instead of regular guitar cable) when you switch to this patch, it will automatically select the Martin D28 model. No knobs to turn, just hit the footswitch to select the patch and you're good to go. Is that cool or what? cool.gif

Anyway, have fun with your new JTV.

Looks cool and reminds me a bit about the Peavey who made a "computer inside the guitar" with very clever autotune system biggrin.gif Of course in this case it's not about the tone versatility but also a cool path that gear producers took to make our life easier smile.gif

Just got it and had my first little jam! It's interesting to say the least. I so far like it, but overall not too sure. The tuning change at a click of the knob is great, but still working out if it's 100% or not. Like you said harmonics would be a good test for it.

Thanks for the Tone Patch, JamesT, much appreciated, will try it out!

Hey Azzaboi, you told me this at Vchat but I didn't really know what "dream rig" by line 6 meant. This is VERY cool. You have now unlimited sounds and effect to create so it's time to start creating music. I agree with Todd about the camera! It would be great to see some videos of you using your new rig.

Congrats!

I'm currently a little bit disappointed in it to be honest. Sure it's nice and all, has some sweet effects, but doesn't seem to have the juice I wanted out of it. Pod HD always seemed to annoy me with that, I want more higher gain metal tones! Creating/customising and getting a good metal tone out of it might be a mission. The acoustics are however awesome, currently the bass might be a bit too high, still needs a lot of tweaking to get to my taste.

Higher metal tones close to what bands?

I know what you mean smile.gif I've tried several line 6 products and always come to the conclusion that they all could benefit from an overdrive in front of the signal chain. Get a Ibanez Tube Screamer or Screamer Clone and push the volume, keep tone in the middle, turn gain down and use it to boost the input. Also, it will allow you to push the gain without it becoming goofy/flubby. I use the PRO TONE BULB DELUXE for the same purpose. Works like a charm smile.gif

@Gabriel - Any high gain metal tones which scream harmonics and melt your face palm muting, without so much background hum!

@Todd - I've considered something like that but never tried it. The problem now is I don't use the standard guitar cables for it, it's a MIDI cable from DT50 Amp to Pod HD500 and quite an annoyingly short RJ45 Ethernet cable from there to the JTV-89F guitar. Maybe I need to purchase better / higher quality versions of these cables or use the real Line6 Link cables? I could place any real pedals in an effects loops but don't believe an Overdrive would benefit that much there? The Pod preset let you emulate one in front of the chain anyways.

I love the fact I can pull the volume control out on the amp to use a lower wattage - better tones at much lower volumes. But I'm getting a little bit of a hiss and they stated I shouldn't be getting any ground hum from this setup at all. I've come to the conclusion my Pod HD isn't correctly setup for the link yet or I might just have a crappy quality cable. Still looking into it.

For strictly "High Gain Work", I'd say skip the digital connections entirely. From the sound of it, they are not making your ears happy. I'm all for using an od in the pod, but using some sort of boost before the signal gets in to the pod can make all the difference. Of course, this means bypassing all of the "dream rig" bits that make use of the midi/rj45. But it's a quick and dirty way to get to the tone I think your after. It's an old trick that works like a charm smile.gif
