This is why I think that a good approach should be based on styles from a point on

For instance - Modern Metal Rhythm Playing - what do you need to cover in order to be able to play that?

Riffs, time signatures, chord shapes and voicings, popular scales and modes and seeing them applied in some lessons 'in the style of'

Pick no more than 10 lessons (from simple to difficult) and stick to them religiously over a pre-determined time span At the end, draw the line and see where you are at. But be honest and stick to the task at hand. Did you get there when you were close to the deadline? It means you know yourself and you are good to go to the next style You didn't get there? It means you need more time and a re-evaluation of the selected lessons. You did get there VERY fast? It means you underestimate yourself and you need to push more
