I sort of miss the "10 most recent posts", 5 is a bit short, things roll off rather quickly.

My understanding is that the into by Kris only show up for people who are not members. Which is good. What I suggest is that the page extends the list of 5 to 10 using that space for members. Which would be a very simple thing to do for your programmer.

+1. I find 5 recent posts too short as well.

I believe the algorithm used to determine which appear was changed also, with the new format. The old algorithm put a weight on most recent post or reply, actually I think that determined it. I think that was a better way to work things. Now you can reply to a post, and it may not even appear on the front page. In fact, it probably won't.

If we decide to go for 10 latest posts we will have to move it all down on the start page - I think that would be a pity as that would mean forum discussion get less attention.

However it is not a completely unlikely scenario that we put something else in the forum spot if we get even more daily updates. We would then have to move the forum posts down.

fkalich I checked the descibed bug with a test topic and it worked, I also tried testreplying to a topic and it also immediately got on top - are you sure about this?

i was not thinking it was a bug, just a change in the algorithm that selects what will be shown. I am probably wrong about that then. It is probably just that with 5 shown, well they get off the list faster, and then it seems that many do not get the attention that they might have gotten otherwise.

what I was thinking was that the logic could be

if this is a paying customer who has been there many times, clearly loves Kris's site, then don't show the Kris intro picture, use that space and the space to the right for 10 forum posts.

else, if this is a new guy/gal who has not yet paid to subscribe to Kris's site, show them the Kris intro video and only 5 forum posts to the right of that.

But just my opinion, and that may not be the one. You be the judge of that, it is pretty clear to me that you have excellent business/operational instincts and will make the most sensible decisions on items such as this, considering all factors involved.

I agree, the intro isn't necessary for those who already have bought an account. Many other pages have a cookie that makes the intro only appear once. So you only see the intro the first time you are at the page. But since the intro to this page isnt full screen, its probably best that it shows every time the page loads. Except for those who are already a member, because thats kind of pointless tongue.gif

Well we could find better use of that spot than a static image of me.

I do however think that having one image makes the start page much more pleasant than with only lots of text. Our previous one had four large images.

There will however be lots of changes the next months - we might perhaps land on yet a new design to fit in upcoming features! biggrin.gif So let's see how things develop!

great. you have a fine product, best out there I suspect. however only i miss the 10 most recent list, i think many that go to the forum a lot probably do, with 5 they roll off quickly. However top level page is valuable turf, and the forum is not the whole package. allocation of scarce resources, always a tough problem.

edit: and thinking about it, having a picture on the top level page probably does something aesthetically. and you photo makes sense. just an idea, you could have a slide show there with all your teachers, which would advertise just how many instructors you have. now, i think that is sounds like a good idea. then again, marketing 101, only 20% of ideas that sounds like a good idea, really are.

then again going back to what was said above, people like me know all this, we are a captive market here for the quality, and probably here to stay. I would suggest that you put in a few check boxes in the users configuration page allowing them to customize the view, once they are members, like yahoo does. so we could just select to not show the pictures, rather show 10 last posts.

boy you are getting good ideas from me. even though only 1 in 5 can be expected to be worth a ****, I will look for that consulting check in the mail. I expect it will show up at the same time that that present my dead grandfather promised to send me 20 years ago shows up.
